I have a '72 f100/302 and a rag joint question. On the rag joint, there are 4 holes, two of the holes are used to bolt up to the power steering box. What are the other two holes for? They had two bolt-looking pins in them but I could not see what they were for. Thanks.
The pins bolt though the holes in the rag joint and face the flange on the
column there is slots in the flange that they fit into, some of the rag kits used
to come with different size pins use the one that fit the tightest !

P.S. have you had a look at your cab corners yet?

The rag joint does not flex under rotational force it only corrects for angle misalignment and not two shafts out of alignment. Out of alignment as with the cab sacking out the cab bushings. The pins are solely there as a mechanical safety in case of a total rag joint failure. Should the rag be old and soaked with oil it will be soft and flexable as well the steering feel like rubber. This will allow pin to slot contact. If you buy a cheap or incomplete joint you'll have problems and a shorter joint life, best to get a quality joint that is complete from Ford, yes it will cost more but lasts.

The pins are also the safety catch. If both bolts would break you would still have some steering (very sloppy though) to get safely to the side of the road
EDIT - Beemer was just alittle quicker hitting the button than I was
After you install the new rag joint, tighten two nuts check to see that the column isn't pulling the rag away or compressing the rag toward the box. The rag joint spline for the box should be able to slide on the spline freely before you tighten down the pinch bolt. This will show that the alignment between column and box are correct, if not you will have to loosen the clamp and move the column bracket on the firewall. Are we having fun yet?
