just when i was about to get the super stock master kit for my extra big block, i hear they stink....the kit has crank, rods, pistons, cam, oil pump, bearings, timing set, and gaskets....it's 814 base price for a 429 and 766 for a 460....plus 120 for balancing, and a few minor charges for other upgrades....
do i really ned to think twice about it???
i was also considering the remanufactured heads for 500....new guides, 3-angle, new valves, springs, seals, retainers and locks.....
I spent about $4,000 at PAW and got a set of rods that were sized wrong. I check each one with plastigauge and they cam out fine, the problem was on the side of the rods. It chewed up my 10/10 rare 428 crank and cost about $1,000 in damage. They wanted me to pay to ship the 700# block to them and pay to ship it back so they could look at it. I had major trouble getting someone to talk to me on their long distance customer service line and then finally the manager said that I probably did something wrong and they would do nothing. He also said the only reason he was talking to me was that I spent so much money with them.
They refused to listen to any other shop other than themselves.
I took the engine to a pro racing shop and they said the rods were the problem and they were sized wrong.
I talked with several others at this site and other sites and found simular results.
PAW has an excellent selection and the big book is great for a reference, but the machined parts are poor.
The money saved was not that much, Summit and Jegs will match the price and no sales tax.
I really think you should go with a local shop that has a good rep. The cost and time to ship something to PAW is not worth it. And they really don't care about customer service.
I went with one local shop and they took the time to listen to the engine and told me the problem with no hassle.
The point is, don't buy machined parts from PAW, if you must buy something from PAW, only buy name brand parts and even then you can save some money buying from Jegs or Summit (they match prices).
We must stand together against a company that refuses to give support after the sale and reward a company that gives excellent customer service (Jegs and Summit).
