I have a '75 F-100 4x4 with a dana 44 on the front.I found out that one of the u-joints on the front axle was shot when i put it in 4-wheel-drive over the weekend. It appears that the u-joint was broke. It was throwing the needle bearings. Does anyone know if i have to pull the whole spindle off or just the brakes and brake back-plate to pull my axle shaft out. My HAYNES manual isnt worth crap in helping me out. Any help that anyone can give i would appreciate it. thanks.

Thanks a lot I am going to the auto parts store to try and find the u-joints and spindle bearings on saturday. How hard is it to pull those spindles anyways i have never even messed with a front axle other than hbs before
You will need a slide hammer and a spindle pulling socket. It can be done without, but do yourself a favor right off and beg, borrow, or steal the right tools.
I have to agree with Nathan on the slide hammer and spindle socket. Saves lots of time and frustration in pulling of a spindle that has been an the axle for 26 years. The parts store should have tools that you can rent to help you out.
On my 75 F-250 the removal of the front axle wasn't that hard and i did it with basic auto repair tools,,,
pull the drum , get a spindle nut socket from auto zone,, $14.00
remove the nut , lock nut , and the retaing nut. then pull the spindle off. unbolt the backing plate bolts, remove the backing plate bolts, remove the backing plate. and just slide the axle right out.....
this is on my f-250 ,,, 4x4 ,, might not be the same ,, but it might help,, cause the chiltons manual is crap.....
Thanks alot for the info guys.I got the u-joint today for 24 bucks along with the new seals. Does anyone know if the hub wrench from my '89 f-150 will work? I already have that socket and dont want to get a new one unless i have to. Another thing, does anyone know where i can find a CHILTONS repair manual??
