Newbie Questions
I just bought my truck and am new to the forum. It is a 1997 F250HD 2WD Regular Cab with an EFI 460, ZF HD Manual Trans, and 4.10 HD rear axle. In searching the forum I am finding that my 9mpg in town is about normal...bummer. I have several questions:
1) Can anyone tell me what the HP/Torque of this engine is and at what RPM does it peak?
2) I have to replace the throwout bearing...any care points I should be aware of in pulling the transmission?
3) The diesel trucks that use the same ZF transmission specify synthetic ATF instead of the regular ATF that is spec'd for the gas engines...is there any reason I can't use the synthetic ATF in my ZF, as I plan to tow heavy loads?
4) The truck runs good and has an abundance of power off the line but feels like it is being held back at highway speeds. It feels like it's running out of breath. For this reason I am considering a cat back exhaust upgrade to a Super 40 muffler and a single large (3"ish) pipe. Any opinions? I have no experience with having custom exhaust work done so I don't really know what to expect. I think if the exhaust is restrictive I will see better performance at highway speeds, but I'm curious to know what effect a free flowing exhaust will have on fuel consumption...anyone have any firsthand experience or real world numbers?
Thanks,
Rob

1. This site shows a '96 MPFI at:
<TABLE cols=5 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD><CENTER>1996</CENTER></TD><TD><CENTER>7.5 (460 ci)</CENTER></TD><TD><CENTER>245 hp @ 4000 rpm</CENTER></TD><TD><CENTER>400 ft/lb @ 2200 rpm</CENTER></TD><TD><CENTER>MPFI</CENTER></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
That was the second site I found that indicated there wasn't a '97 - but there probably is (as you have one)...? Either way, it's probably the same as your's, except those numbers are for a new motor, hopefully yours isn't too tired.
2. I've pulled mine twice. It was real heavy both times. I used a strap around the tranny up though the shifter hole and around a 2x4 to keep from getting crushed by it.
3. Not sure where you got the fluid spec, but I was warned about what fluid to put in it, and remember having to get synthetic AFT (still have a quart on the shelf). Mine is also a 460 gasser.
4. My truck didn't come with a cat. It had two pipes going into one muffler then one pipe to the back. If I remember correctly, that muffler was about $130, part only. I went with the biggest $20, flow master looking things I could find. Got one for each side. Put a short turn down pipe on after that (I know - tell me that's a bad idea). For me it's perfect. Flows great, and cheap too. No ill affects at at. The truck sounds great! As for gas mileage, I believe the only way you'll improve mileage is to drive like a sissy.
BTW - I rebuilt my 460 at 200K miles. Bored it 0.030, put a cam and a new Holley 700 cfm carb on it. Runs way stronger than the newer ('99) V10. Although I'm working on that.... (gears, chip, exhaust). As soon as I get the salt spreader off of it (the '87), I'm gonna put my kid in one of them and run 'em. Cant wait to see who wins.
Thanks for the reply. My truck has 115k on it so it should have a few miles left in it. I got the fluid specs from the owners manual. I went to Ford to get the exact synthetic fluid specified as well as a T.O. brg. I'll pull the trans in a couple of weeks as soon as I free up some space. I have a small shop and I work on Land Rovers. I bought the F250 to tow the Land Rovers and run to the freight docks. It came with a liftgate on the back and a 16ft tandem axle trailer as part of the package. My current project is a Defender 90 that I am fitting with a 300Tdi (2.5L diesel) and a big Allard turbosport intercooler for a customer in Colorado. I have a tranny jack that will handle the ZF...it looks like it would take your breath away pulling it without one. I haven't quite made up my mind on the exhaust. I found 2 pretty reputable exhaust shops in Albuquerque. I will have to have a custom exhaust made for the 300Tdi...so I think I'll wait to decide until I see the quality of the work they do on that. Thanks again for the reply.
