OK I'm getting a new diaphram as the old one was shot..and have a couple of ??'s on the XRi
1. The grommet touching the top plate I can get around but why is this happening is mostly the ? Manufactuar error ?
2. The 8/32 screws that hold the top plate in position when tightened down keeps the top plate from swiveling easily - the plastic washers ride the edges of the notches in the plater at the far ends and it tends to bind..do i need another washer at the bottom to lift these or ? I take it the plate should move very freely.. but not teeter..
When in doubt talk to the folks that know.. Crane Cams. (Tom) says
1. Cut the lower half of the grommet off up to the flange so it will have a toung on the inside at the top to hold it in place and avoid the top plate..Kudos Tom...
2. Use locktight on the 8/32 screws like the instructions say Jerky!!!... and they only need to be tight enough to snug things up no pressure on parts..
Well much better now, we'll see how this all pans out ...
Sorry I can't help as I have no experience with a XR-I install, just Allison / XR700 and XR 3000 series. I have past hammer experience with Pertronics.
.....=o&o>.....
LOL yeah Gashog mentioned the same thing...so I decided to go with XRi it's mostly the maintenance free thing I just don't fancy points. Even in my garden tiller...I wonder if they make this for my 65 Mercury outboard ? The other reason was the rev limiter as I know my brother can't resist when he has the wheels to himself... can't wait till he asks why it wont rev like before...
My Mark 55, 58 and Mark 30H Mercury outboards all have magnetos, better than a XR-I any day. All you see is mags on Top Fuel engines. Back to Crane products they usually come with good instructions. You up and running?
.....=o&o>.....
Yep with no oil pressure!!!! That 859k'n drive pin is going to be the deat of me... I had it in place with a magnet as it came all the way up with the distrubotor like last time.. but this time I snagged it and left it hanging with a magnet.. I got home, grabbed the tiny magnet to set it in place with daylight on my side.. thought I had it, the distributor was a bit fussy and then tunk, I just be Damn!!! Sat it is I aint fartin with it tonight..may just say to hell with it and grab a new one.. we'll see.."freekn, frgn,rstlfraztl,dgnmgfrggn..!!!!!"
i bought a rebuilt dizzy just for that reason. my stock dizzy was a little worn and 40.00 got me a brand new one with a vacuum advance. the advance was 20.00 a lone so i figured i would go for it.
I just put the XR-i in mine. I,m pulling it out now. I put it in my original 67-352 dizzy and I had to drill a extra mounting hole in my bottom plate as mine were not straight across. I posted a new thread on this but I have gotten no replies yet so I,m going back to my Pertronixs just to get it to run. I hope yours works for you.
Well it was fine after fishing out the oil pump drive shaft..I ran it for 20 min or so let it warm, reset the timing to 12º with the vac line off and blocked. Shut her down to run an eran upon returning she would not start..the gas is low as it dripped out from the BS fittings on the aftermarket pump..maybe ?? need to check but I'm gettn my fill of this truck lately... a break is in order... besides cant fish from a truck
Charles my plate had a stamp on it that showed the top side (UP) but would not go in this way I had to flip it for the holes to line up. All in all I think this thing must work or ?? But it does seem to have design issues.. I think an extra thin washer under the bearing cylinders for the 8/32 screws would be a big improvement. The stator plate seems very loose on my setup in my opinion..I may go back to points if it doesn't tidy up... The truck seemed to idle smoother and increase rpm smoother with the points (even with a shot vac diaphram) ???
With the (don't get mad at me) Allison and XR-3000 the truck when hot would start 1 of 100 times just by turning ignition on then flicking off to on without engaging starter. They were simple install without any "make fit" problems. If it were me i'd jam that up Crane's orifice for selling a product that doesn't fit without modifying and get my money back. Your only a half step up from points, go a little more and upgrade your system. JMO.

Bob, I had 2 spacers to go under the 2 screws that made mine seem just right. My Pertronics Flame throwerII coil blew this morning so I'm wondering about this Crane setup. I took it out and was putting my Pertronixs back in and now I can't locate the top original plate that I mount the Vacum arm and points to. If I cant find it tomorrow I guess I need to locate a original dizzy and start all over. Good luck with yours
I think stock reman dizzy are available for a fair penny..I kept all my pieces in a bag after removal for this reason...I hope to get the XRi working but if not ?? points will have to do.
