Continuing oil leak saga

To continue the mysterious oil leak story...

I didn't let the beast idle while in Troutdale OR. The next day, I drove up to Gresham, dropped off the trailer & drove back to Troutdale (7 miles total). I filled the oil right to the full mark & took off for LaGrande OR. No oil used in the 250mi trip, including 1 hour idling while hooking up. Hauled a trailer to Lewiston ID, parked at the Flying J & idled overnight, about 9 hours. No oil gone, no additional leak!!! Drove home after loosing the load, about 200 miles. Since the valve cover & mating area on the head are still dry, but the exhaust manifold, lower half of the head and the side of the block show wet oil, I pulled off the right exhaust manifold. There is a small (1/4" or so) plug about an inch below the right bolt hole of each exhaust port. Anyone know what's behind that plug? One tech at the stealership thinks it's coolant; the others don't have a clue.

The illustrated parts breakdown does show a 1/4" pipe plug in that location, but so far I can't tell what it's plugging.

The Ford parts folks say it's a steel ball, #6026. About the only way I'll figure this out is to find a head that's not sitting on a block.
