Misdirected heat

When the heater control switch is set to upper vents, at idle the heat comes from the vents. During acceleration, the heat (air flow) is diverted to the defroster and lower port. Any idea where the control valve is. I suspect a vacuum issue.
This is on the 97 Ranger, 4x4, manual, 4.0 L.
Thanks for all your input.

Rockledge,
Found the problem. The vacuum pod under the hood had come loose, and wore through on the fan belt.
Thanks for the help!
