I am getting ready to purchase a New F350sd 4/4 diesel, I am not sure which gearing I should get. I will be driving a lot of highway miles and some towing. How much milage difference between the two?
Thanks
Bryce

P.S. Because of the power of the diesel I see a lot of people ordering then Super Dutys with a 3.73 Ratio. For what you would do, you would probably be ok with that.

Well unless you get dual rear wheels, you don't have a choice. SRW only comes with 3.73 in Diesel
I've got a 2005 F350 PSD SB CC 4x4 and went with the 3.73s. In hindsight, the 4.10s would've been a better option. If you're going dually, I'd consider 4.10s a minimum, or 4.30s.
If the Single-rear-wheel came with a 4.10 I would have opted for the 4.10
I'm putting 35's on the truck today and staying with the 3.73 gears. (seems like many here have done the same with diesels) and not noticed any difference in mileage and driveability. But would have prefered 4.10
if it is a dually it will be a 4.10 which will get about 12-15 MPG. If you dont tow ever day I would get a regular 4x4 with 3.73 gears
This about sums it up. There are only 2 gear options available for the DRW's. 4.10 or 4.30. If fuel mileage is a big concern, a dually may not be the best choice since both of these ratios are better suited for low-end power, such as getting a heavy trailer moving and up to freeway speed pretty quick. I've never seen mpg's better than 15, no matter what type of driving I do, or what I'm towing/hauling. I'll be able to tell you what a dually with 3.73 gears will drive like in a couple of weeks. I'm about to put 35" tire's on mine, which will give it a new effective gear ratio pretty close to 3.73. I get the feeling that won't last long and I'll end up switching out the gears to put it back to close to stock. So I guess your choice is between 4.10 and 4.30, in which case the 4.10 will probably be slightly better for mpg's.
I have an '05 F350 CC DRW 6.0 with the 4.10. It tows great and gets about 17 on the highway unloaded and you can expect about 13 in city driving (depends on how heavy your right foot is). I wouldn't even consider anything less than the 4.10 for a DRW. IMO, it's the best all aroung gearing for power and decent mileage.
