Still didn't tackle it...

I bought a rebuilt starter for the 79. I had the old one tested, and it was bad. I got it and installed it in the truck.

Turned it over, hoping it would fire up........

It didn't. It cranked more, though. Almost got up running (around halfway) but still won't run. The battery cables still get hot, even with the new cables I just bought. I even brushed all of the cables end with a wire brush before putting them on. They are 4 AWG.

When it cranks with the new starter, I can feel a scrapping metal sound when cranking. Maybe something threw or spun in there before the truck was parked? Probably just my imagation or I got broken engine/trans mounts.

I also need to rebuild the carb. What is the best rebuild kit available? Is this job diffcult? The carb is a Ford 302, 2V. C4 auto trans with A/C, power brakes & steering.

I suck at troubleshooting cars. =(

Still didn't tackle it...

the last time i needed a carb rebuild kit, i called the ford dealership- the parts guy there told me to get an Eklin (spelling?) kit from Napa.

he said their kits are the best.

whatever you do, don't get one from advance auto. after my recent rebuild with one of their kits, i noticed that i was leaking gas from the top gasket...turned out, the whole gasket was cut about 1/8" off, and wasn't even close to sealing.
