JTHill, sorry didnt see the last post, come to find out the dist cap is OFFSET. It wasnt sitting right in the dist. I looked at the old cap, noticed the cap screws were not centered with the coil button, switched it around and wala, it started right up! Im letting it warm up now, will take it for a test drive.
It was probably the fuel filter all along, but all of the other things REALLY needed to be replaced anyways, the van has over 195000 miles on her. If it was my truck I wouldve checked the filter among the first things. But all of the sensors, van being computerized throws me for a loop. I really really appreciate all of the help one here, this forum is one of the best, just like the Full Size Jeep forum I belong to www.ifsja.org , full of helpful friendly people!
good job Allen, you stuck with the troubleshooting until the real problem was found....
lots of enjoyable Aero miles ahead
distributor way in back of engine on van is NOT a Ford better idea for working on and viewable access
hated Chev V8's for that same reason, reaching back there with the HEI ignition could cause permanent high voltage body damage, van was impossible
Ok new problem. Now the motor shakes. Checked all of the plug wires to make sure they were correctly connected and they are ok. Double checked the wires to the cap, and double checked the order. Sounds like its missing. Tried timing to no avail. Stalled once pulling out of the driveway. Took it for a run, doesnt have the power it used to. Missing or popping at all speeds. Got it home, was real bad while in gear. Put it in reverse, set the brake, and went to the exhaust. Flowing good, popping real bad. Look underneath the van and the catalytic converter was glowing red hot.
Glowing Cat usually means that it is toast, sorry. I have a feeling that is what is causing the poping noise too (broken cat material inside blocking your exhaust and moving) because you double checked the wires.
Have you seen your spark plugs? Look at color! It can hel you to understand what's going on. Yeah, it's dsifficult to remoove it!
May be you have tnjectors dissbalance (leakage). Unfortunatly it is difficult to remoove injectors to check if your engine is not remooved. You have to remoove TB before, but there is not enought space ander the hood, so it is really difficult.
Ok re traced all of the wires again, 4 and 5 were mixed up. Switched them around and she runs like a champ! Thanks again for all of the helpful advice!
My grandfather told me: if you have more then 3 problemes in your, begin from the cheappest: fuel filter, fuel pump, clean fuel lines, check fuel pressure, chek a spark, spark plugs...
BTW! Look inside the tank!
P/S I made a hole in a floor to replace fuel pump, remooving seats and carpet only... It's really diffiult ro remoove the tank...
I just did the fuel pump on my 97 last weekend and i came really close to doing the same thing. If I have to do it again I think I will get out the big hole saw.

Did the same thing on my SHO, alot easier than dropping the tank.
Ones I mixed up wires. I tried to start the engine and it was a litle explosion... Air filter was damaged, but it was old.... Fortunatly there were no aditional expences.
