I hope you guys can help me. I have a 1970 F-100 which I would not trade in for anything...my wife even suggested this once...she is going to counseling. I bought this truck from my brother-in-law about 8 yrs ago and things have been great. Until i go to the parts store and they ask what kind of engine it has....well...its a rebuilt from another ford, it and the tranny and i have no idea what size it is. I know this much so far.
V-8
Tranny # D2AP 7A040 AA
from the tran pan shape i think its a Cruise 0 Matic 3 speed
Their is also an aluminium tag near the distributor with these #s on it printed in three rows top to bottom

Ok...next problem....I need a pitman arm and cant find one anywhere...not anywhere...it has power steering.
Grun, Do the spark plugs face this way on each side \\// if so you have a FE engine, you would about have to have a FE to be running a C-O-M tranny. Does it have an Alu. bell, cast iron middle, and alu tail shaft, or is it a one piece tranny (bell & body)?

I will be adding a reply to this once I get home.. but 4 wheel and off-road had an interesting article on how to Identify Ford engine series by the # of bolts holding down the valve cover! And by gosh they are RIGHT, I know this because I have a 360FE, 390FE, 351W - 335 series and a 460 - 385 series engines
I will either scan the page or take a picture of it and POST.. its good info!

Thanks for the reply...the plugs insert at a slight angle back on the left side and the right side is facing forward at the same angle...the bell is aluminum and it is also ribbed on the outside the tran body is cast and the tail looks cast also (the metal isnt smooth..kinda small pitts all over)..on the tail of the tran there is a tongue that is bolted to the bottom that comes down and extends past the end about ten inches..almost looks like a counter weight??
Ok...i found out that 8 bolts on a side signifies the engine as either a 351M or a 400...thanks for the help guys. Now I at least can tell the guy down at the parts store one or the other. Also if anyone knows where i can find a pitman arm ...all the junkyards around here are dry...is there perhaps a mech shop that produces these on order or am i looking for that part that ford or any other company decided not to make so i would have to buy a new truck.
Thanks Steve....Hey what yr model is that Bronc that you standing next to with that funny green uniform on :-)...the only bronco that i ever got to work on at a regular basis was the OV-10 kind...and it was a twin prop..appreciate the knowledge.
Lets See... If your refering to the picture of me standing next to the BIG Camoflagued truck.. then thats a M-1070 HETT. Its the Tractor Trailer the Army uses to Haul around the M1-Abrams Battle Tank. Its also 8 wheel drive.....
