Hello all ford lovers and thanks in advance. In my truck I have a 360 with a C-6. Bone stock with new dist., plugs, wires, cap, rotor, timming chain & gears. When I drive for about 15 to 20 minutes it starts to ping & looses all power on the smallest of hills. I am planning to rebuild in 2 months. I want more power (of course) but not too much and on a strict budget. Im not a wiz on rebuilding so any help will be nice. What internal and external motor parts should get to accomplish this? Wher are the best deals? What signs should I look for when taking it appart? Again, thanks.
Your timing may be too high causing the pinging. Back it down a couple degrees and see if that helps.
As for the rebuild the 360 is a detuned 390 (390 block with a 352 crank). Buy a 390 piston and crank set and you will have a much better performing engine. Maybe better gas milage as well.

In the cool still quiet of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
I second that! If your on a tight budget, you might consider waiting longer because the FE is an expensive engine to rebuild.
Back off the timming and do a full tune up and consider installing the Pertronix ign upgrade for about $60 and never have to change points again.
The 360 should be converted to a 390 at rebuild time because the cost is not that much more and the power of the 390 over the 360 is substantial. To complete the conversion, just order a 390 crank kit (pistons, crank...) you might have to pay an extra $100 for a good set of 390 rods.
I'd get the 390 car pistons rather than the truck pistons for zero decking (where the pistons comes to the top of the block at TDC)
Have the standard FE oiling mods done to insure long life (search the archives for FE oiling for more info on that)
