99 powerstroke towing problem

I* have a 99 F-250 powerstroke and i have a tough time towing up hills with my fifth wheel camper. i since have installed a four inch exhaust and a cold air intake. also i installed a edge tuner. still the turbo seems to be bypassing all the air coming into it. i have spoke with several people and they all agree with one thing, that i need a new turbo and a after market wate gate. anything after this i,m not sure ?? do i still need a tuner ?? do i need anything other than the turbo ?? any help would be appriciated, i,m very confused thanks Mike

Have you checked to be sure the waste gate is functioning at all. If it is stuck open you are going to loose a bunch of power. My 7.3L was fair at towing and I've hauled some heavy loads but after removing the muffler on the stock exhaust and installing aftermarket filter as well as programmer the darn thing could out haul anything up real steep inclines.

Normally when a turbo fails it fails and I have never heard that it just starts leaking out the housing or soemthign causing loss of power. The waste gate is operated by an actuator that may be bad and you could remove the entire thing locking it closed as long as you have a boost gauge.

If I was you I'd first look into these things and check it out before I spend a bundle on a new turbo when the set up you have should produce plenty of towing power without any problem.

Elk Chaser is right. I would also give a hard look at all the intake boots to make sure that none of them are leaking.
Also don't discount a failing MAP sender or something along those lines.

Get in there and start listening for hissing sounds and follow the sounds. That is the first step I think

I had hissing sounds in my truck when i first got it .... they were coming from the air bag .......... sitting next to me.
Seriously, if there is a power problem, you want to make sure the waste gate isnt stuck open ( it is spring loaded closed), then you should check the boots to the air induction system (turbo) If they leak, you are loosing boost. If The map sensor is faulty, it wont let the ecm process correctly and shut down the fuel. Check the e z stuff first. I dont know if the map sensor can be bypassed and still have the engine operate ... DAN, what say you ?

It will run with the MAP unplugged, but only with enough power to maneuver the truck.

Good grief, guys. Mike didn't say, and nobody asked, whether he has guages. There's a lot of guessing going on, with no diagnosis. Mike, if you're running all that without guages, who knows what you've fried by now. Get guages, post some results, and maybe the situation will become clearer.

Lots of waste-gate talk here. Can anyone point to a thread with pictures/instructions on checking this?
THANKS!
