Yeah, I know more of the usual. But to do it right, without IFS, I'm looking to go either Mono(from Midfifty)for a 5" drop, or the drop axel w/ smoothies. Money shouldn't be an issue but it is. Even removing a couple of springs for now is the cheapest option. Fella's if you have any suggestions on Mono(5" drop) let me know what your thoughts are. I really want it "in the dirt," without doing IFS.
I think of the two options a dropped axle might be easier to deal with. With that much drop you may encounter steering and/or clearance issues. Personally, I prefer IFS...
Are you planning on driving it, more that to a cruise every so often? If so I'd stay away from the Mono, I've seen too many change their Drivers back to multi leaf, even with short pacs.
I agree with Great North. The only way to really get the low stance is with the IFS front end. I have the dropped axle and have removed four leafs on my leaf pack. The springs are stock (not reversed eyed) My front is as low as you can go. I have about 1" of travel clearance between the frame and top of axle. And I even shaved the rubber bumper in half for additional travel. The front on mine does hit hard and bottoms out if I hit a pothole, etc. Look at my gallery and you can see how low the front is on my truck. If you want to go lower, you may consider airbags or IFS.
imlowr2 I like the stance of your ride. right now I'm at 30.5" from the center of the fender to the ground(front) I'd like to get it down 5." To answer your question, I'd be driving it more then just occationally. The drop axel sounds right, As far as the leaf removal, what 1,2,4,6 from the bottom?
LOW- Remember the measurement on the front can change by having smaller profile tires also. That will make your front look lower, but will also give you some gap in the fender wells. I measured my fender and I'm at 24.5", that's with a 17" wheel on the front and a 215/45/17 tire. As for the leafs? Your suppose to remove every other, I just removed the smallest, 1,2,3 etc. I'm running with three leafs right now. Before you get all crazy on the suspension lowering, I'd take out two or three leafs and see what you think. Remember too, when you lower the front, you need to do something with the rear to balance out. Or you'll have too much rake and everyone will call your truck a "stinkbug" LOL... You can always go from there. Good luck.
lowr - Sounds like I'll do that first, i.e take a few out at a time. you can check out my picks to see the stance now. I've got 15's on. I could live with 3" mmm...maybe 4..LOL. Anyways got a long ways to go! Cheers
hey low,i don't think i would go with mono-leaf's.just remove a few leaf's at a time untill the truk sit's the way you like it.it look's like you need to get the back end down a little bit,and maybe get shorter rear tire's.you do have a nice looking truck.
Low, I don't think a mono is the best way to go with what you are trying to achieve. Play another way. The mono does not make for a good ride to begin with (imo) and add that to a dropped old truck to save a buck and you are asking for troubles. I too was impessed with the mono some time back as it looks cool, but sold it for 1//3 my cost just to start over.
Thanks, hot1958 I'm really excited about it...I want to do things right though...ya know, wiring, stance, paint etc...I was out there again this Am measuring the stance, and I will hold off on the Mono's. I want a "truck ride," but not what I here mono's give. I also, think it has a drop axel. From different pic's i've seen it doesn't look original, and appears to drop down more. Could be wrong but I'll call the guy i bought it from. I'll take you fella's advice and take a few leafs out at a a time...also, with the back. I just got this rig three weeks ago and still have trouble sleeping, thinkin about all the projects I want to do!!! Like a kid waitin for Sante' Clause!
Thanks again for your helpful advice, This weekend I'll try taking pic's before and after with the front end leaf removal. If any of you are in the North West let me know! I'm in Central Oregon.
Grab yourself a paper copy of the Mid Fifty catalog, they have a lot of info on how to achieve various drops with the original suspension. I have a 2" dropped axle, their smoothie reversed eye springs, and find the stance and ride quite to my liking, and I'm VERY fussy about both. Posies has recently come out with a set of their super-slider springs for our trucks that would be a serious contender if I were in the market, they do it RIGHT! Except for parkinglot bragging rights, monos have little else to recommend them.
