Tranny swap
I have a 94 rwd 3.0 which runs very well, except for a slight thump when it shifts from 1st and 2nd gears. I also have a 90 rwd 3.0, which I parked when I got the 94 about 3 months ago. The junkyard computer said that the two trannies are not interchangerable. My question is, can I put the 90 tranny in the 94 if I change the bellhousing, etc. I want to keep the 90 tranny for a backup if I can use it.

Depends on whether or not the trannies are both A4LD. If they are, then they will swap no problem. However, rough shifting has a lot of causes, and swapping trannies doesn't sound like much of a plan. Basic maintenance may be all it needs, new fluid, filter, basic flush, and new modulator. If that doesn't work, then you really didn't waste your money, unless you plan to get rid of it anyway.

lot of back busting work to change two tranny's....check the one in the '94...has many of the upgrades and improvements made to A4LD....drop pan...change filter...check for metal cutting and amount of worn off friction material in pan bottom...drop valve body and clean- check 1-2 shift valve...put in new servos and modulator...adjust bands....do 10 qt ATF change

Yes they are both the same (A4LD.) The tranny did not change until very late 95 model year and the easiest way to tell the difference is to look at your shifting choices. If you of OD D 2 1 then it is an A4LD, if it is OD 2 1, then it is a 4r44e or 5r55e depending on engine and year.
