M5R2 5spd. question....

Hello all,
First of all... Love this place!

That being said, I have a quick question for all you 87-91 truck guys..

I was looking on previous posts about the 5 speed trans. Ford put in these trucks. I learned some info, but not all.
I was wondering first of all, the M5OD and the M5R2 are the same thing right?

The M5R2 they put in 87-91 trucks is the same trans. that Ford put in Thunderbirds of the same era???
Only difference is the 2wdrive output on it, correct?

I know also that only about 600 or so 1988 model F-150's had a ZF trans in them. The rest of the F-250's had ZF's in them as well correct??

Thanks for your help!!! EVERYONE!
TONY Z.

The thunderbirds likely had a T5 made by borg-warner. The mazda transmission (M5OD/M5R2 are the same) was only used in trucks as far as I know.

M5OD is generic for Mazda transmission, M5R2 is specific to F150s. The M5R1 was Ranger spec.

I believe the M5R2 was used in MN12-bodied SuperCoupes and XR7's with the supercharged 3.8 - but can't be certain that it is identical to the truck spec transmission.

Thanks for the info Flat4vw,

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF the M5R2 trans is the same for supercharged 3.8L Thunderbirds and Ford F-150 trucks (87-91 era).

Thanks,

PS. Can a Tremec T-56 totally replace a stock M5R2 5spd.? in a Ford truck?

The Tremec is a 6 spd.

I stand corrected - the M5R2 was used in super coupes. Not sure what or if anything is different from the one found in the F150s.

Ok another question...

Is the M5R2 5 spd. the same as in Bronco's and F-150's and F-250's?
I heard the Bronco's case is a bit shorter? and you can not swap between the two, because of the length difference.

And also, the 6 cyl. and 8 cylinder models are different and can't be swapped. ?

The 300-6, 302-V8 and 351w-V8 are all the same bolt pattern so yes it will bolt up among those. The flywheel has to match the engine because the V8's have weights on them. The Bronco uses the same exact gearboxes as the F-150. The 4x4 versions of any transmission has a different tailshaft and tailshaft housing to allow the transfer case to bolt up. The M5R2 4x4 version and the ZF 4x4 version are the same length, and are 3.25" shorter than the E4OD if I remember right. Ford also never put a M5R2 behind the 351, the biggest it was behind was the 302.

Thanks everyone for their answers.

One more question, is one of these M5R2 transmissions hard to get out?
I mean is it easy to get at and all that?

Not that I know of, just lining up the input shaft splines into the clutch disc, etc.
