I'm doing a brake job on my 93 E350 cube so I took the engine out. Don't ask, this brake job has turned ugly.LOL
Any way I've got the heads off the 7.3L and I was wondering if I should put in new head bolts or reuse the old ones. After everything is back together and the engine is back in and running(hopefully) they are gonna be impossible to retorque. What's the propper way to do this.
BTW you don't now fun until you've done engine work on a van.
I read somewhere that head bolts are good to re-use 2 times? something about they stretch and can no longer maintain proper torque.I always wondered why you get an ordinary engine sometimes that just keeps blowing gaskets. Anyway,I figure new headbolts are cheap enough insurance.
No turbo. Have you ever looked under the hood of a deisel van? I don't think there is room for one.Took the van out of service for a brake job...while we are at it we should fix that leaking exhaust manifold, lets take it off and put in a new gasket...hey someone broke a stud off no wonder it's leaking...that rad is pretty soft lets take it out while it's in here....hmm there is oil leaking from that valve cover and from that head gasket...the oil pan is pretty rusty too. welp, we're this far now..easiest way to work on a van engine is without the van so out it came.
In some ways taking the engine out of a van is easier than a truck. Top bell housing bolts are a sinch. Tough part is it has to come out through the front not straight up.
I think I will put new head bolts in. I'm just worried about not being able to retorque them. I'm not pulling the engine out again to retorque the head.
You do not retorque head bolts on this diesel engine.....once and done. Do the torquing by the book for your year in the correct pattern(s) then leave them alone. Felpro gaskets are turbo rated now as are most others, Felpro has increased their torque specs by 10 ft lbs on the final 2 steps to 110 for the 93. So 65/90/110/110 there are two patterns of torquing make sure you know how to do it right.
