i have a 98 f150 4x4 with the 5.4, it is stuttering bad when a little acceleration, had codes pulled and they are p0155, p0401, and p0174, can anyone help me here, thanks
P0155 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
P0174 System too Lean (Bank 2)
P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected
I'd check the O2 sensor first. The second code is telling me that it is no longer sending any information to the computer, causing it to call out the too lean condition. This could also be sending the EGR system out of whack as the conflicting sensor information is giving the system fits as the computer tries to fatten up the mixture to account for the bad sensor. I don't know what the correct resistance is for the sensor to test, unfortunately.
I've got a question, is bank 2 sensor 1 the pass side front one? If it is, your best bet is to just change it ( about $50 at Advance), and you'll need a 7/8 wrench ( they make a special socket for that because of the wires and the fact that they don't like to come out most times), and I like to remove the plastic inner fender (makes it a whole lot easier to get to).
Established protocol tells you to address the codes one at a time, in the order they were issued by the scanner. Fix the first one, then test for any remaining faults.
That said, I suspect you actually have three separate faults:
1) Heater circuit open upstream sensor driver's side. Check the sensor's connector for corrosion first. Test the sensor's heater for an open circuit with an ohmmeter. Replace if open. The heater is only used during cold engine startup so that the sensor can operate sooner and allow the PCM to switch to closed loop operation sooner. Emission control strategy.
2) Likely vacuum leak.
3) EGR ports clogged or DPFE faulty. (Two most common reasons for the P0401).
well, went to the dealer today and wow!! they came up with the following: 2 ignition coils need replaced, all plugs, 6 other cop boots, dpfe hoses change, and dpfe sensor change, and clean egr ports. their total for all of this is 548 parts, 982 labor and a little others total is like 1763.19 then the guy said that something else would probly go wrong when all this was fixed, if anyone can help please let me know

Reason: forgot something
lol, that serves writer just went down the list, I'm supprised he didn't put new catalytic converters on that list. Pick any one of the replies above and have at it. Do a search of the forum for "how to's" on any given part.

If I had this problem, I'd replace the DPFE myself. Change the attached hoses. Check/replace all vacuum hoses to the EGR system. As I mentioned above a vacuum leak will account for the lean code and set O2 senser codes and account for the EGR flow code.
After replacing the DPFE etc. Clear the codes and drive for a few cycles. If the CEL lights up again have the codes read again and post them here.
