help me please,
i have 1978 f150 4x4 351m 4 spd .
when i get to second gear or third i get a stall at above 1/3 rd
throttle.ive changed fuel filter,fuel pump,plug wires,plugs,checked timing,
checked advance unit, changed coil, hooked gas can to fuelpump to
bypass fuel lines and tank, increased float level in carb a little.
no vac leaks.
it seems that it is not getting enough fuel above 1/3rd throttle.
if i pump it it will pick up speed.
no backfire or major jerking.
i pumped fuel into jar it pumped but what kind of pressure should be there.
could the cam driving fuel pump be worn down.
how bout slack in timing chain??? what would that be like?
could the pickup in dist be faulty.
i have been trying to figure it out for 2-3 weeks.
its a real weird deal i think.
thank u for helping meif u can .

My guesses are, if u have to pump it to get it going: carb jets have crud in them, loose boosters, power valve problem. Lack of air flow? Mouse made house in air cleaner or ducting. Weird stuff, wrong coil, use old one to check. Weird stuff , coil wire high resistance or not installed all the way in coil or distributor. I ran into that one before, 4 different mechanics missed it, not me. Weird stuff..timming chain jumped or worn distributor gear. weird stuff, clogged cat converters, bent over tail pipe, worn dist bushings, choke stuck closed..slipping trans,or bad clutch, dragging brakes,,ign wires on wrong clyinder, not enought timming advance..GOOD LUCK HUNTING DAHMER
hey guys,
i finally broke down and bought a carb. and that fixed my mechanical problem.
didnt help my financial problems wery much though.but im back on the road at full power now and i am happy. thank u all very much for your correspondence and helpfulness i shall always be indebted.( have to owe cause spent all my money on carb.)
Glad the carb solved your problem. I bet one of your accelerator pump orifices was clogged. You can look down the throat with a flashlight and check for two squirts of fuel when you pull the throttle back (engine off, of course! lol) It happened to me; It was a clogged accel pump orifice.
But, you have a better carb now anyway. So for next time, check it out. If there is fuel in the bowl still, you may be able to check it out off the engine, just for some piece of mind.
