My '76 highboy with 4.10s has a 100 MPH speedometer, which is pretty undesirable since you really don't want to drive this truck above 55 MPH because the engine noise and gear whine will drive you out of the cab . I'd love to trade it somehow for an 80 MPH.
I've had my 76 F-250 SC with a built 390 and 3.54 D60 at 100+ a few times. Darn near ran over a vette on I- 10 west of Pheonix in 98... It was a wonderful thing. The guy in the vette thought that I was a 747 climin down his beehind.
My 66 f 100 came factory with the 100mph speedo, I tend to put it over where it wants to hide the needle...saw a 200 mph speedo on ebay for a cobra, what a conversation starter that could be!
History Lesson.
Ford switched from 100 to 85 mph spedos in 77. Some 77's still had 100's just to finish off their inventory. I dont remember all the reasons why (since I had just been born) but back then they had the "oil crisis". The government lowered speed limits and forced the auto manufacturers to limit their spedos to 85 mph and also highlighted th 55 on the spedo since it was the common highway speed. Have you noticed that there arent too many cars from the 80's with spedos over 85? Some time in the 90's the government changed the rules to let auto manufacturers have spedos over 85.
