Fuse problems...

Howdy....new guy here but would appreciate some collective help.
'99 7.3 PSD blew the #30 underdash fuse panel 30amp fuse. Manual says it controls the fuel heater, wastegate solenoid, and injector driver module. Thought it might have been a suspect fuse so replaced it, but it blew again the next day. No other problems noted.
Anyone else have a similar story with a solid fix aside from replacing all the above parts? Checked wiring for obvious short but found none. Truck ran 100 miles before it blew the 2nd fuse.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

I'd be willing to bet your fuel heater is on it's way out - unplug it & see if the fuse doesn't blow. Not a bad job to change the heater. Not hard to damage the heater when cleaning out the bowl while changing the fuel filter. Did you change it recently?

Agree with dagren99, there is a small thin metal filament in the bottom of the fuel bowl to help prevent waxing. I'd do as previously suggested, unplug the fuel heater and see if it still trips the fuse. This seems to be the problem for most on this situation.

Are you sure that you are using the right size fuse? Maybe switch to a bigger one!

Great idea as I did change the filter about 3 weeks ago, cleaned out the bowl as it appeared pretty nasty but turned out it was mostly corrosion that wouldn't budge. I did bump the heating filament a time or two in the process (should have remembered it on my own...duh!).
I'll replace it anyway and let everyone know the results.

Great website and from all I've read, great bunch of gearheads.
Thanks again.

Question Fuse

Just curious - What did the corrosion look like?

I just changed my filter about a week ago & my fuel bowl is squeeky clean. All I did was drain it & replace the filter. Maybe you got some bad fuel a few times.

Do you run a anti gel additive regularly? (Diesel Kleen for Ex)

Replaced the fuel heater and all is well in the Last Frontier. But it wasn't w/out it's challenges. With limited retail in AK, had to suck it up and go to the dealer for the part. Even after feeding the "Oracle" Ford parts computer my VIN, it was still showing the wrong part. Luckily a saavy mechanic happened by and hooked me up w/ the correct part (and saved $100). But the mechanic and my Haynes diesel manual were both wrong about the removal procedure. Heater plate attached w/ 2 torx screws, standpipe spring-loaded under the plate, not screwed-in or reverse-threaded as I was told. And be gentle connecting new heater terminal as blade on existing t-stat is very flimsy.

I'm a bit concerned also about all the dark brown corrosion coating at least 50% of the interior of the filter housing. Read everything I can concerning diesels, but there's still no substitute for experience, ie I got the truck used and the corrosion was already there. I'm very careful w/ fuel and use PowerService Grey and PS White religiously in addition to regular filter changes. Filter housing change in the near future??

Thanks again to all for the helpful advice.

Sweet man, glad to hear ya got it fixed. From what I have gathered here the brown stuff can be cleaned with brake cleaner or similar solvent. I am goint to hose mine out next filter change.
