Well I got my motor back from the machine shop yesterday. Bored 30 over, Fel-pro gaskets, comp cam .447 lift 212 duration 1000-5000 range, comp part numbers 66-237-4 grind f66 260h-1c, Got the head milled for more compression, ordered hooker super competition headers from summit. I think thats it. Also got a 3 sp. w/ OD manual (pretty sure its a tremec, that everyone seems to think is junk, guess I'll find out), so no more power robbing C6, and finnally the highway is an option since I'll have overdrive, maybe some 3.55's or 3.73's down the road. Pictures are in my gallery. Right now the crank, cam, main bearings, and rear main seal is in. Pistons and rings, tommorrow, maybe paint the block.
gallery says an 88 f150. Is this EFI? if so, was wondering what lb. injectors. I have a carbed 300 in my 79 Bronco now, but have an 89 EFI one to rebuild for later, plan on hopping it up a bit too.
I think your referring to the same transmission thats in my dad's 87, his door jamb says trans code b and his is a 3 speed w/ od. He hates the tall 1st gear but likes the od. I've heard it's a weak tranny as well and he will be needing a clutch fairly soon. Congrats on the buildup.
Hey thats looking good. What kind of pistons are you using? What compression ratio are you looking for? Keep us posted. Fred
To say the truth I'm not sure what kind of pistons Im using, brand wise. Their .030 with a half moon type looking dish, looks kinda like " |) " Ill get pics of them tommorow. The guy at the machine shop said they were shorter than the stock ones, so with the head being milled and the block decked, it should be just a bit over stock.
Havi, Im still using stock injectors
Krista20, sounds like the tranny I have, I've heard their weak as well. 1st gear has around 3:1 ratio.
Today we put the rings on the pistons and dropped them in, Installed the oil pump, & cam gear. I only got 1 picture from today, and it was before the oil pump went in.
I think it's also known as single rail overdrive srod or top overdrive which is tod for short. I wonder how they compare against the m5od. His truck has 150k some miles and the tranny has held up fine but we also don't use it to tow anything, I think maybe thats where it's weakness lies. His has 3.55 gears like mine which I was suprised because from the little researching I've done that 3.08 is what it was usually paired with. I was going to get his a hitch for it but then I knew how 1st gear was and then I read about that tranny being weak so I felt it was better off that we didn't put one on there.

I did some research in my 1982 and 1986 orginal ford truck shop manuals. The transmission you have in your gallery is a Top Mounted Shifter Overdrive Transmission (TOD). It only shows it in my 1986 shop manual. The TOD was used in F150's 4x2 4x4, Bronco's and light duty F250's.
The Single Rail Four-Speed Overdrive Transmission (SROD) is the one I have in my 1982 F100 with the 300. The SROD has an aft mounted shifter that sits to the left of the tail shaft housing.
I'll work on scanning the pictures from my shop manuals so you can be sure of what you have Schmids4.9l.
I need to crawl under it and see where the shifter is. I just got done doing some searching and it sounds more like the tod because the shifter is more up on the hump just like my m5od whereas the srod is back at the seat.
Schmids, what gears you running now? you said your wanting 3.55 or 3.73 so it sounds like you have 3.08 or even worse. With the od tranny you will want at least 3.55 gears. Just a guess but you might only be able to use od at interstate speeds with the gearing you have now. You can play it be ear and see what you can do with it, you will have 3rd so you can just run it in that gear until you do a swap.
Sorry didnt get any more pic's, I had to give my buddy his digital camera back, but I painted it red. Tommorrow the headers & intake are going on, and I have to put in a new slave cylinder and master cylinder.
3.08's now, it should be fine at 55+ I'd imagine.

The one I have is a top loader, the tranny in the middle and right in your gallery. The side loader looks like a pain to get into reverse.

With the C6 it turned around 2600 rpms at 65 mph, give or take 100. With a 300 thats screaming. Hopefully it will be around 1900 rpms @ 65 in overdrive.
Heres the picture of it. I made a thread in the tranny/clutch forum, and a person or two said it was a Tremec.

if it's nice tommorrow I'll crawl under his and compare it but it has to be the exact same one. I think you'll really like the manual tranny a lot more than the auto. I guess with a manual you can shift and keep the engine right in it's powerband. I've never driven a 300 w/ an auto but I've heard they are gutless. Yeah with that screamin engine you should be able to take advantage of the od. Dad did say something a long time ago about going to a 4.10 but he runs 235/75/15 tires and I think that would be a bit much.
Sounds good man. I think there were only 2 manual 4 speed O/D's. 1's reverse is all the way to the left and down (mine) and one is all the way to the left and up, kinda weird. I also have 235/75/15's. I cant wait to get this bad boy on the road. Even though I'm not the best at driving a manual, I'll get used to it quick. If everything goes good, It'll be rolling to the exhaust shop Monday.
It's kinda gutless with the C6 I guess, but Im not too sure, I havent drivin a stock one with a manual. C6 kills some good power thats for sure. Its a good tranny, but its not in good use for what I need. Im more of a daily driver and bed loaded down hauler. When I had the bed packed down with mulch it drove fine, I could barely tell it was back there! And it was completely loaded down. Gotta love it
