There was a process here in the gulf coast states that appeared in about 1976 and went real strong untill about 1982 it was called Ziebart undercoating. they would insert long nozzles thru existing body holes (or drill their own and plug them in critical areas) that would shoot a tar like substance into all the inner body panels, under the fenders, body etc and it would dry after approx 24 hrs. it was also really reasonably priced. to do a full size pickup was approx $600.00 and it carried a lifetime warranty. (Alot of good that would do since it seems they are no longer around!!) but I had several of my trucks done with that process and I never had a rust thru. It also served as a great sound barrier. One of the reasons it was discontinued was because of the tremendous amount of heat automotive components produce would cause it to produce a really bad smell.

The reason why Ziebart went belly up, is becuse their product was junk. My 86 F-250 was done by them, the stuff they used, over time would get hard and flake off. My truck rusted out just about everywhere. Zeibart VS Michigan, Micigan won big time.

Ziebart is still in business... http://www.ziebart.com/. I had my Expedition rustproofed there and never had a problem. Now looking at getting my Excursion done somewhere. I am more concerned with the body than underneath. Has anyone used the DIY rust proofing kits? I just ran across one at JCWhitney.

I went to the ziebart site and it does not look like the have any locatins near me in the US. It really sucks you and others in Michigan had problems because I had 4 trucks and 2 cars done with the stuff and never had a rust-thru and I lived on Galveston Island, TX and spent allot of time on the beaches and such. Down here in Texas it does not get very cold at all so maybe it had something with the cold making the undercoating brittle and it would flake off? Not disagreeing it just worked great for me and several other friends that lived in the area. i also hear using rhino lining it not a good idea on the underside of vehicles because with water draining "down" it can actually trap water between the coating and the metal and actually cause or promote rust. I have thought about using the stuff from JC Whitney but never gave it a try if you use it and are satisfied with the results please post and let everyone know you experience with the product

The problem I had, I had bought the truck used and it had already been rust proofed by Ziebart, when I don't know. They would not back their product, because they said "it had not been touched up, once a year" to keep the warranty active. It even rusted around their damn little plugs in the lower part of the cab pillars.

That's a possibility.
I just called a place here in town, that everyone around here swears by. They use a Texaco product that never gets hard, they don't drill any holes they take off all the panels and get the stuff in every nook and cranny. $260.00 for my truck and with a max of $15.00 touch up every 3 years . Lifetime warranty
The man said, that it does have sound proofing quality's.

That sounds like a good deal if they do it right. From what I've been reading, rust proofing may not be necessary. Apparently manufacturers have improved their processes and cars don't have near the trouble they used to with rust. Keeping it clean goes a long way. I may still do the underside though.

What place was that? Hopefully there is one, or one like it close by.
That is a much better deal than maaco quoted me. I am looking at doing it to damper the road noise, not so much rust proofing. I put some ospho on for that.
