No. The heat generated is related to stoping force applied and the inherant cooling ability of the rotor. With a good quality pad and rotor you can stop at the same rate as before with less pressure applied and less heat generated for the same stopping power. Its a higher efficiancy thing. The OEM manufacturer worries about safety, not necessarily max performance or longer service life beyound what is commanly accepted as normal.

. . . and let's not forget FOMOCO worries about COST!
That's a big factor in the basically minimal-quality pad being used on the brakes.
Just like inkjet printer cartridges - HP sells their printers with "starter" cartridges. They don't last long but they allow them to sell the printer at a lower cost.
the ceramic pads actaully keep the rotor cooler becuase they can wick the heat away faster. yes per set is 4 pads. skip the low cost ceramic pads they are not equal to the quailty ones. the good ones will contain a decent amount of copper to aid in stopping the cheap ones may not and could be made from compressed ceramic media.

390,
Have any specific suggestions on brands/models of pads that are in the "quality" category?
Hawk and EBC are about the most widely accepted names in performance brakes. Hawk has a line called Superduty that is very attractive....EBC is a company that has been around for 20+ years in offroad racing as well as road use. Shoot me a PM if your interested in pricing on any of the ceramic brakes out there. You can google for HAWK brakes, and for EBC brakes if you want to learn a bit more.....
I just read a bunch of reviews on the Hawke pads at thetirerack.com and found them to be poorly mixed.
Most of the "bad" reviews state that the pads do NOT reduce wheel dusting. With this type of mixed reviews, I'm hesitant to use them. I'd much prefer to see some more consistent favorable responses.
