Thanx 96....oddly enough that's pretty close to exactly what I was doing last night trying to decide how much further to go on that last tranny. Only I wasn't runing the fluid through paper. I ran about a quart through the tc, by filling it, swirling it, and trying to dump it and repeating. I didn't even see that section in the manual...but good to know...I may do that on the newest old tc just on principle. With the lines, I just inserted an air hose and blew all the fluid clean out...*giggles*. I wasn't very popular in the shop after that stunt as a very heavy tranny fluid mist filled the shop....after that stunt I'd hope there isn't much crap left in the lines at all but, I'm still going to flush and fill after installation.
Tranny is in and running!!! I found a great trick for putting the torque converter....actually my buddy found the trick. I'm hoping this is a good one...if not please let me know so I don't share with anybody else. Basically the reason the torque converter wouldn't go in all the way was because the inner shaft wasn't seating into the torque converter. What we did, was pulled this inner shaft out, and put it into the torque converter first. Then we lined up the flat edges and voila...the old torque converter went in right away. Tried this trick on the old tranny just to say it wasn't a fluke and it worked there as well.
Hopefully my last question on this matter isn't a painful one. The van seems to run fine. I've added about 8 and half litres of fuid into the system so far and it's finally reading right on the stick. When your running the van all the way up to 90km/h or about 55mph there is a chattering noise that I can't decide if it's a loose heat shield or something else. After about 90'ish the noise goes away. My question is....hypothetically if I did get a small warp in the ring gear would it do this and would that be really bad for the tranny pump??
Other than that...all looks well....I'm thinking I'll run her for about a 1000km or 500miles give or take and flush a good 9 litres of tranny fluid out the bottom of the rad while she's running unless the general consesses says sooner.
Thanx again so much to everybody!! I couldn't have got the job done without everyone's input.
Dan
it was me who mentioned the ridge of metal on the t/c input shaft. By the way I think by forcing it you would have wrecked the fluid pump in the tranny, I guess the only way to check it is to pull of the bell housing and have a look but if you do that you will need a new bell housing to tranny seal, might be worth taking it to local tranny shop and have them check it out, I always have my local tranny shop check out my used trannys before I fit them they only charge me $60 and they fit new front and back seals and filter. I would certainly check it out before you try and fit it again, because if you have wrecked the pump, when you try to run it you will wreck the rest of the tranny as well, believe me I know from past experiance.
