IP issue
I was wondering if anyone could tell me the purpose and name of the "flapper valve" on the side of the IP in an older 7.3. This is on the right side (driver's side) as it is mounted in the truck. I have fuel pouring from the valve, it is broken off just above the pin that holds it to the pump. I jammed a screw driver in there to keep it shut and the truck started and ran well so the pump itself is not broken. I checked with my local parts store and they only sell the whole IP for $500!!! Can anyone tell me where I might find just the valve on the side? Can it be repaired?
Thanks

That pin is what adjusts the timing as you feed more fuel.
A diesel injection service should be able to get the arm.
With a screw driver jammed in there it is hard to tell where the timing is at.
If it is rattling real loud I would not drive it. Engine damage may result from the timing being to advanced.
Thanks for the info. I will try to find a diesel injection service here in Minneapolis. I don't plan on driving around with the screwdriver stuck in there. I just did that to see if I could get the truck started and charge up the batteries a little. It was not unually noisy and I only ran it at idle so I doubt I did any damage besides it was still leaking some fuel and I didn't want to start a fire.
This might be the reason why I had trouble with the truck being so noisy when I started it other times. This may have been going bad for some time.
How would I check for damage to the engine from the other times I may have run it with the timing too advanced?
Thanks
