At some point in the future, I intend to install a pyrometer. However, at this time I have spent all I can just getting the parts and having the heads redone, and so I must wait.
I am trying to plan ahead, since i have the manifolds off already, I had thought to drill & tap a hole for the pyrometer probe at this time rather than having to remove the manifold a second time. Of course I will run a plug into the hole after ti is tapped, I was just wondering if anyone knew what the size & pitch of the thermocouple is on an ISSPRO pyrometer. Thanks in advance.
On the drivers side exhaust manifold, in line with the exhaust port on top of the manifold. Thier are 2 thoughts on the location if you run a turbo, one is the exhaust manifold - if the tip of the thermocouple ever breaks it will end up in the turbo, but gives you a real direct reading. The other is after the turbo on the down pipe - this gives you a cooler reading so you add 200/300 degrees or get a pyro that is for the down pipe. If I remember 1/4 NPT is the tread size, check the guage manuf. web site.
I have personally driven pyrometer equiped trucks for several million miles. Never have I had a tip break off, may happen tomorrow though.
1/4" NPT is the correct size.
Drivers side manifold at the cross over pipe connection is where mine is.
After the turbo the numbers are correct plus or minus a couple of hunderd degrees.
A couple of hundred degrees is also the difference in no engine damage and engine damage.
Why guess it is OK after spending money on a pyrometer?
Never had either but give the pro's and cons and let them make the choice. Would not put in the cross over, I prefer to have it mounted at the exhaust port for a direct reading. Just my preference.
The location above the connector for the cross over pipe is almost outside the # 7 exhaust port. My thermocouple was to long to go in the runner for the port since I drilled and taped the manifold.
