Today I was looking under my Aero and found out that my spare was misssing. At first I was mad thinking somebody stole it. But, after I looked a little closer I could tell that the bracket that connects to the cable that holds it in place had completely rusted out and the donut tire fell off on its own. I can only imagine what the person behind me must have thought when they saw my tire flying out behind me.
donut tire...good riddance...not worth the effort to put it on...
normal size tire will fit EXT...
i put on a larger wind up cable years ago...original is tissue paper thin
I swear there was recall on that but I can't seem to find it? The only one that I can find via NHTSA is this: 1995: Underbody spare tire can contact brake lines, resulting in fracture of line.
mine fell off as well. that was years ago. took the whole winch out... took to my shop guy. he drilled out the saddle to remove the old cable... re threaded it and crimp on a brass sleeve. have not fell off since. i was fortunate that it happened in a parking lot when i just crest over a speed bump. noone was behind me. i was able to recover the spare and saddle.
There was a recall on the spare tire winches. My 95 shorty was recalled. The recall was for rusting cables. At first I ignored it because the winch & cable in mine were both in good working order. Ford sent notices for about 2 years until I finally responded. I took it in and the tech snapped off all 4 mounting bolts removing the old, perfectly working winch. He drilled out 2 bolts and installed 2 undersize bolts to hold the new winch.
My cabel is rusted too and ones I had to use spare. It was difficult, but sucsesfull, after that I have my spare inside.
And 2 crime stories:
a yong men was found by police under the truck in Moskow. He used to steal transmittions of Gaselles! It's possible, but its difficult!
The other story: starter of our Volvo F-10 was stolen! But the police found it!
I dropped mine while driving off a ferryboat in Italy last year. I had the full size spare and although I had it also secured with a chain, it came off. We noticed it because the Italian dockworkers were yelling. Now the spare is inside taking up a lot of space. On short hauls, I have the small one inside which fits under the 3rd row bench but on long trips I take the full size. A few years ago I had to drive 800mls with the little spare - that cured me.
You know what come to think of it I've never even taken my spare down can't imagine what the air pressure in that tire is I'm going to check tomorrow along with the cable to make sure its not rusted.
Did that recall apply to 96 Aeros as well or was it just the 95s?
As practice shows, 90% spares are not inflated well. How often do you check your spare? Ones a year? May be checking pressure every week can prevent cabel rusting...-
