i was just wondering why are warranties so short? i would think for a 40,000 dollar truck that it would be longer than 3/36,000. i bought a new truck in 1995 and after 10 years i would think that ford would have more confidence in their trucks to offer a longer standard warranty.
Ford doesn't make money off warrenty repairs, it's given that a certian amount of parts will fail withen the warrenty period, but most will fail outside of the period, making ford more money.
Plus, think of all the trucks that are abused and used hard....farm trucks, or just people who just give vehicles hell for example. In the course of 10 years...Ford would have probably replaced the entire truck if not some things twice.
You find longer warranties on two different kinds of vehicles. You have longer warranties on very expensive luxury vehicles because the people expect it and they would have to make exceptions anyway due to the kind of vehicle and kind of customers that buy them.
The other vehicles that have longer warranties are the ones that people fear will break down and they can't sell them without a long warranty. Chrysler's 7 year 70,000 mile warranty was instituted to boost sales due to a reputation of poor reliability. The 10 year 100,000 mile warranty of both Hyundai and Kia is what boosted their sales as they got very poor marks for reliability in their early sales years.
More people are more likely to abuse a vehicle under warranty then when it is not under warranty. Many people do not do the "severe duty" PM for their work trucks when they should and this means parts fail early. Usually after three years and before ten, especially transmissions.
They don't make money if a car lasts forever and you don't buy another one. Besides, much of the public neglects or abuses their vehicles and still demand warranty service.
This is one way Ford could get some customers. Consumers are big on warranties, and it would make Ford appear as if they are willing to stand behind their work.
The dealer I purchased my 06 from provides an extended warranty to 5 years 100,000 miles on the drive train, but you must take it to them. I believe it is for their customers who purchase new vehicles at their dealership only, their finance manager offered an extended warranty to me for additional $$$ that would be good anywhere in the US.
