gas tank

hello
I just bough a 1989 F-150 XLT Laroit 4x4 with a 302 V8 and duel tanks around a week or 2 ago. The back tank is brand new, but the gauge is off, if its empty it says full, so i usually use the front tank. Just today i went to fill up the front tank and realised that its leaking, mostley near the front of the tank. Ive never seen it leak before, but this is the first time i filled it up, anyone else had this problem, and is there any tips you can give me for fixin it. Im pretty sure its not a hole, but I think its not held together righ, because the leak is near one of the clamps on it. Also one other thing, this may be nothing, but i'll say it anyway, I put $6.00 in the back tank, which was completley empty, and $39.00 in the back, when i realised the front was leaking I flipped it to the back tank, which is not leaking (i checked it) and drove it home, which is less the 2 miles from the gas station, and when i got to the top of the driveway, the truck ran out of gas, now i know it gets bad gas milage but i think it should at least make it to the house on $6.00, anyone know what might have made that happen.
Thanks
Josh

Check the front tank and see if its more full than before. There is sometimes a problem where one tank fill the other. Its called crossflow and there is a recall for it.
