Grounding sending units

Hi all,

I have a 72 F100 with a 390 (I think). I have a cluster that had no guages working. I put new sending units for the oil and eng temp. The Oil pressure guage works great. The Eng Temp didn't work until I wired in a light with the + coming from the guage wire and the - grounded into the body. The guage seems to be working well now.

I was curious to know if the cluster may be missing a gound wire somewhere? My fuel guages doesn't work either unless I wire in some ground too. Has anyone heard of this before??

Thanks,

Tony in New Meixoc

Hello, If the ground wire from the engine intake to cab firewall isn't present, clean, and tight the gauges can be erratic.

It Should be on the upper rear of the intake and go to the firewall somewhere near the throttle linkage. If it isn't there it wouldn't be hard to add one.
