What does it weigh?

Hello all,

Just joined the forum. I am seriously considering purchasing a 2004 Ex LTD 4x4, with the 6.0 PSD. If I understand it, this vehicle carries an 8900# GVWR, a 20,000# GCWR, and a GTWR of 11,000#.

Does anyone know what the truck should actually weigh in at? I have heard anywhere from 6500# to 7500#. Has anybody weighed their's?

Thanks

Tim

If that is the case, then there is certainly a reduced payload. The tongue wgt on my trailer is 800#. If the truck is that close to Gross with nothing in it, I think I'll look for a pickup.

Thanks

What's wrong with an Excursion for hauling a trailer with and 800# tongue weight? If my math is correct, you have room for 1100# of tongue weight. It's raining outside so I'm going to go and get my manual but I thought the Excursion was rated for 1000# of tongue weight and 11,000# of trailer weight. I know I've seen some huge travel trailers going down the road behind an Excursion.

I know the truck will handle the tongue wgt, but when you add in 800# of tongue wgt, and 500# for kids, wife, dog, assorted camping gear, bicycles, etc, the load on the truck rapidly approaches, and maybe even exceeds GVWR. I am going to ask the dealer to weigh it, before I go any further with the deal making. I also seemed to have my numbers wrong. Some further research has revealed the 4x4 with the diesel has a GVRW of 9200#, not the 8900# I origianally believed to be the case.

Base weight GVWR

5.4L 2X4 6680 8600
5.4L 4X4 7162 8900

6.8L 2X4 6756 8600
6.8L 4X4 7230 8900

6.0L 2X4 7341 8900
6.0L 4X4 7770 9200

A 6.0L PSD 4X4 has a Base weight of 7770 lbs. without any options or packages, a GVWR of 9200 lbs., A GCWR of 20,000 lbs., a 1100 lb. weight dist. max hitch weight, and a maximum tow capability of 11,000 lbs. without an other passengers, cargo, or options.

Given that it is a Limited, figure that you probably have around 200 lbs. of options, about 310 lbs. of Diesel fuel.

(20000 lbs.) - (Options + fuel + passengers + cargo in vehicle + vehicle base weight) = Maximum allowed tow capacity for your vehicle on that trip.

The GVWR of 9200 lbs must be less than or equal to:

(Hitch weight + Options + fuel + passengers + cargo in vehicle + vehicle base weight)

The best option is to put all the cargo you can into the trailer to decrease tow vehicle load.

It's been about 6 months since I put it on the cat scale with my 4 year old nephew in the truck with about 3/4 tank of fuel, I believe the ticket was right near 8700 lbs. My ex is 2wd.

I think I'm just gonna ask the dealer to weigh it and show me the scale ticket. Do all of the diesels have the 44 gallon fuel tank? At 6.2 lb/g that is 272 lbs.

Problem is the trailer is already pretty close to, if not over gross. I weighed it last year, and didn't realize that I had both some water in all 3 tanks from the last trip (maybe 20 gallons total, fresh/gray/black) and was about 200# over gross. I plan on weighing it right after I de-winterize it this year.

Thanks all for the input, it is greatly appreciated.

My mistake housedad. I was working from memory and mixed the two up. Either way, if the truck weighs out leaving 1200# or less in usuable payload with a full tank and me in it, then I may have to look for a different vehicle. I already talked to the dealer today, and they will try to get it weighed tomorrow or Wednesday. I told them I wanted to see the scale ticket too. The salesman tried to quote me the factory base curb weight on the phone today.

Again, thanks to all for thier input.

Just for the heck of it, and to verify weights instead of looking at the book figures, I went down and weighed my truck today on certified scales at the Flying J truck stop.

Just remember that mine is NOT a diesel.

Full fuel (gas), 2005 XLT V10, Have added Helwig rear sway bar, Firestone rear air bags, and Firestone heavy duty air kit.

Front:----- 3460 lbs

Rear ------ 3780 lbs.

Total ----- 7240

That is strange. Ford lists that truck to not be over 7230 dry. But with 75 lbs of accessories and 277 lbs of fuel, it came in at 7240.

I hope that that works out for you, also. That is 350 lbs less than I thought my truck weighed.

Actually, I took the truck that I am looking at on an extended test ride today. Stopped at the local stone yard, which also happens to be the closest state certified scale, and the '04 Limited, 4X4, PSD, about an 1/8 tank of fuel, and my 4 yo daughter in her child seat was 7660. I just got total weight. The guy in the scale house did me a favor and I didn't want to tie up his scale to long. The spec's listed with FTE show the base curb weight to be 7680, so I see a similar discrepancy.

Either way, my question, and concern's have been answered, and I put a deposit down on it today, just need to discuss it with the wife, and then negotiate a final price tomorrow.

I should be the new owner by Saturday if the wife approves???

The saleman had an Oasis report for me to review. Quick question, the previous owner had it in for A/C service twice. I am going to look into it more tomorrow, and see if the dealership can pull some more detailed records (they sold the truck originally, and did all the warranty claim work).

Build date is 8/03. Anything I should look for on that one??

Thanks all, you have been helpful.

Tim
