Power Steering Leak

So the 69 is leaking again. This time it's at the end of the hose on the PS cooler. I've thought about some formagasket on the end of the hose. It is also leaking from the box. Does anyone know how well the PS fluid with stop leak in it works? I really just need it to get me through the summer, then I'll get a new box and all that stuff and fix it the right way. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

So really, no one's tried this or has any ideas? I guess I will pick some up tomorrow after school and give it a go.

What model?

If it is on a hose to or from the cooler that is lo psi. Is it crimped? On mine I ground off the crimp and installed a new hose with double clamps. 4 years later no leaks. To me it far easier to drop the pitman arm and pull the top off the steering box. This way you can have better access to the retaining clip and knock out the high psi seal from the top.

Yes, it has one hose clamp on it. I've messed around with it some, but I may some more. I guess even if I do get it with a clamp, I will possibly still try stop leak for the box. Thanks for the advice on the box, but after 36 years and ?45,000 miles it's pretty well wore out so I'll just get a new one (if the motor makes it through the summer) then I should be good to go.

Have you tried adjusting your box?

On the top is a jam nut (5/8 Socket) break it loose then hold it loose with a wrench. Use a large flat screwdriver and turn clockwise on the shaft 1/2 turn at a time until it feels snug then back off 1/4 turn. While holding the shaft with the screw driver tighten jam nut with the wrench. test drive it if it fells loose go in a little more. If it wants to bind back off a little.

I do not recommend stop leak. It softens and swells the rubber components. It is a short term solution. Even with basic hand tools you can rebuild the entire power steering system yourself. The repair cd for sell on this site is a good place to start.

Yea, I've tightend the box and it didn't help. I put some stop leak in today (since I didn't see this post til now) and drove it some. I'll drive it some more and watch it and see how it holds up. I know this is only a temporary solution, but like I said I plan to get a new box and all that junk later on.

How does the rag joint look?

Not saying a box won't wear out, but I would inspect every wear item 1st. This includes king pins and tie rods. I drove my 70 f100 350 miles after we got it. The steering had slack after an adjustment. Upon further inspection the cab had sagged wiping out the rag joint. When I pulled it off it was literally holding by 1 thread. Since then I have only had to make 1 box adjustment.

Happy motoring.

i thought that adjustment was for steering play-having nothing to do with a seal leak.

Yes were talking about leaks at first.

He stated that the box was pretty well worn out, so he would replace it. I was offering all possible solutions to avoid spending money.
