Front end clunk

My '91 3.0 makes a slight clunking noise whenever I release the brakes. I've jacked up the front end and found that when moving the wheel back and forth by hand (hands at 3 and 9 o'clock) there is some play of the tierod within the steering rack body which I think accounts for the noise. Can this be corrected by replacing the innner and outer tie rods or am I looking at replacing the entire rack and pinion assembly?

If the rack is not leaking, you can cut the clamp and pull the rubber boot back. That would expose the inner tie rod which is fairly easy to replace. You only have to drill out a small rivet ( or finesse it out with a small pair of pliers like my brother did), then you can unscrew the inner tie rod from the rack. Really easy.
