Smoke Stacks

I am looking to get a new exhaust system for my 97 f250. I was thinking about stacks but wanted to get some opinions on it first. Some people say they are too much for a pick up truck, but I think they would look pretty mean. How much differently do they perform compared to any other exhaust? Are there any problems with them, especially when it rains? Also, where is the best place to buy them? I have seen them on ebay.

Welcome Wittmer. No stacks aren't too much for pickups. Do it and you will never go back. I personally got mine on ebay. Just the stacks for $130 shipped. I had to build everything else myself. ie the splitter, brackets. I bought all the clamps and the 4" to 5" adapters at my local big rig parts house. I had all the 4" 90's and flex pipe to make it work. But if you don't have that, Black Cloud sells some excellent setups with everything you need. I myself built custom rain caps that hang off the tips and cover the openings when it rains. Mine turn out, but if you get water in them and spray your ride with the black soot, you have to wash it right away or you'll never get it off. But coffee cans got me by for a long time. I just got tired of catching hell from my coworkers so I built the custom ones you can't see unless your right up on it. It's a small price to pay for the compliments and grins I get from them. Go with the stacks you'll love them.

ditto what Rubberduck said. i've got the mitre-cut tips on my stacks, and i built them myself. still usin coffee cans to keep the rain out (hah, what rain in texas?) i'm running straight 4'' pipe to 5'' stacks i go t at a truck junkyard for like 60$$. all the work and money that goes into them are WELL worth it. everyone notices your truck, and boy howdy do they sound awesome. i still get a silly grin on my face...

but seriously, if you get rain in them and blow it all over your truck wash it off THAT second....i learned the hard way and ruined my paint by letting it sit all day. black soot, white truck, no bueno.

GO FOR IT! you'll love 'em, i gaurentee it!

hey RD, hows it been goin? sorry its been a while since i was around...

What's the performace increase like with a set of stacks? Also what happens if a good rain comes and you get a decent amount of water in your exhaust? Does it just get blown out and create a mess?

you may have an egt drop, and engine may be a little more responsive than with the stock exhaust, but shouldnt be any major power gains. Some put a 1/8" hole in the exhaust somewhere to let the rain water drain out, thats prob what i'll do next weekend when i install my stacks. I ended up going with 5" mitre cuts, 5" cross tube, and im going to go as close to the engine as i and and come back with 5". This baby's gonna sound awesome, I cant wait!

blowing wet soot (ie:rainwater) out of your stacks creates the BIGGEST mess. i wouldn't put that on my worst enemy....i just keep my cans on them when it rains, no big deal. or you could put the whole, but theres still that moisture in there thats gonna get your truck messy. seriously, avoid water in them at ALL costs. even moisture will make black spots all over the roof of the cab and the bedrails and down the side.

here is 25 pics of mine, both trucks.

I love mine, gets a lil loud on long road trips or pulling a decent load, but rain isn't a problem, snow either.

I was wondering what happened to you. Not much, same ole, same ole. I did sell my tuner and bought a Jody Tipton 2 pos. It's awsome. But yeah, that was you I was refering to about the black soot incedent. So where you been hiding brother?

I've never done exhaust work before. If I get the kit from Black Cloud, how much and what type of work is involved? Any welding? I know I'll have to cut through the bed.

from what i understand with that kit, thres not much to be done. when i built up my stacks, i never once touched any of it with a welder. used exhaust clamps (the pre-formed strap kind, worked better, and easier, and ifi ever have to get rid of the truck, i just unhook all my stacks materials). i bought all the tubing pieces from a truck supply place, and a new DP from TYMAR.

Wittmer, I got the black cloud kit without the stacks because I found the stacks on ebay for $71. Like Redstroker6 said its all done with clamps. It was very easy to put together with the instructions that came with it. My international store here has stacks for about the same as I got off of ebay. They are about 4 feet tall but they could be cut down if neccesary. Dont hessitate on the stacks you'll love em, I do.
