My 72 F100 has a 3 month old power steering pump. I go out to start it the other day and it starts squealing bad, the pump heats up instantly and gets very hot. Resistance is so great the truck wont idle. No power steering. I removed pump, pump worked, connected pump without lines, and pump worked great no probs, so i thought I had a clogged line. Cleared the pressure line and forgot to do the return line (im not a morning person) and it still does it. I will check the return line as soon as I get a chance. Is my gearbox shot or can the pump just not handle the pressure. The gearbox shot out fluid when i turned the wheel witht he lines disconnected. I have a lifetime warranty on the pump, but if its not the problem, I dont want to go through the hassle of swapping it out. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Aaron
When I bought my new pump, it had a tag on it that said it was normal for this type of pump to squeal for a while then it should go away but I didn't have any squealing.
I was told that you should turn the wheels lock to lock a few times to help purge the air from the system, but I'm guessing that you've already done that.
You should either have a inline cooler or the tubes should run along the bottom of the frame to help with cooling, I noticed that mine runs hot with the long lines and no actual cooler so I'm going to grab a cooler next time I see one.
If the pump is heating up real quick and acting like what you say, I'd say the pump is bad but before I replace it, I'd make sure you have a cooler and purge the air from the system first.
Kragen offered me a heavy duty pump, but I went with the standard one. You might see if you can get a HD one, it was only an extra $30 or so.
