I have the tailhousing bolts removed and the S5-42 4x2 is sitting in the floor. The shifter is removed and the front shaft is loose. The yoke is off. Am I missing something? What else needs to come off before everything slides out?
Do I need a wee bit more muscle?
My shop manuals are on the way, but this shouldn't be rocket science.
A ZF comes apart by the numbers the rear housing should be down and the front housing is lifted off but there are other parts need to be removed first.
When rebuilding mine, I found it easier to disassemble by putting the bell housing on a flat surface with a hole for the input shaft to go through... then lift the gearbox part upwards. After removing all the bolts, it required quite a bit of tapping with a rubber mallet to get things a little loose, so I could lift it out. I tried it the other way but couldn't balance the gearbox on the workbench where it was stable enough to yank the bellhousing section forward, so I did it the other way.
Don't beat it too hard... and definately use a rubber mallet. Remember it's been together for a very, very long time.
I found that I had missed two bolts that were down and back from the nameplate. These bolts had been covered with grime from the 10/88 build day. Not only were they covered with a bit of grime, but they were Allen bolts that had inserts in them to prevent a wrench from getting in. After loading a 3/16" bit and spinning backwards at first to break the freeze, I drilled forward and they popped out when the bit started cutting.
Lousy two bolts stopping me from getting it done earlier!
I plan to have the case parts hot-tanked to make them clean and new again. Are there any other parts from the trans that should gp to the machine shop?
Also, does anyone have a spare drain plug for a ZF?
