A good motorcycle for two?

My girlfriend is in the market for a motorcycle now and I'm wondering what you guys would suggest. I used to ride years ago....last bike I had was a 73 Honda CB 350 4 cylinder....it was a nice machine in it's day.

Needless to say I haven't drove a motorcyle in years....other than short drives on friends bikes...less than a mile.

What do you guys drive and what would be a good beginners bike that will carry two people comfortably?

There really isn't a nice cheap bike anymore that will carry more than one person. I'd look at the Suzuki line they have some nice larger bikes, Harley's are overpriced IMO, you pay for the name. Honda's Shadow line is also a nice set of bike. I'd say go ride a few and see what you like.

Okay...I will open myself up to ridicule but who cares....not like you guys actually know me!

I bought one of these for my wife to be able to ride somewhat hassle free. Many things "sold" me on the bike.

It was cheap.
CVT tranny means no shifting.
582cc parallel twin gets 50+mpg and tops out at 110mph (proven.)
The thing will MOVE out....for as giant scooter. I've out run many a big bore cruiser just for fun.
It is extremely comfortable for two.
Tons of storage under the seat.
Full wind and weather protection.

I find myself riding it more than my wife does! I'm working on a project Super Motard bike (A 96 KLX650) and it is currently not rideable so I ride hers. If you can get past the "I'm riding a giant scooter" thing you'll be okay. I very secure in my man-hood so it doesn't affect me...well...it took 3 counseling sessions...but doc says I'm fine

The Shadow is a pretty good bike if you are under 5'10" or so. My buddy had one and it was just too small for me since I'm over 6' and he is only 5'8".

Monsta, I don't think you've been ridiculed about buying the wife a scooter just yet, and I'm not one too cast the first stone... I own a Honda Helix, AKA CN250. I traded a buddy a couple of used firearms for it. At the time, local gas prices were about $3-$3.40/gallon.

Imagine a 6'2, 250+ guy on a 250cc scooter in rush hour traffic!!! I'm not saying it's the "coolest" ride around, but then again, mine gets about 75MPG at 55MPH and tops out at a respectable 77 MPH on flat terrain. Scoots aren't "uncool" in my book...

I ride a 2004 Honda Goldwing. Hardly a "beginners" machine, but I pretty much started out riding on it. Just respect the power that the machine can make, and take the MSF course to refresh your skills.

I know. Let's ask Arnold. He crashses everything.

"Hey Arnold".

"Da bigger da bike, da better da bike." (within reasons, of course.)

I'd say somewhere between a 500 and 750.

Maybe a Miyagi Turbo.

Monsta, Is that a moped/vespa? (kidding)

I have an 82 goldwing, IMO there isn't a more comfortable ride for either the driver or passenger. My wife has an 86 Yamaha FAZER, uncomfortable as heck for 2 but nice for just her...

My son and I ride on my wing and my wife drives hers, with the trailor behind my bike we can go and do almost anything without a cage

While we were still married, I bought my (NOW EX wife) a Honda Shadow 750cc. with windshield and saddle bags. She learned to ride on it, passed her driver's course and test, and rode with me while I rode my Honda VTX1800. It just didn't work both of us riding on one bike. The seat was too uncomfortable, too noisey, too rough on the tail, bla bla bal. The only way she liked it was to have her own ride.
In a small part of our divorce settlement she kept the Shadow.

Go to a dealer a sit on them. Make sure they are big enough. I'd stick with something like Honda.

Those older Yamaha Virago's (spelling?) in the 920 or later 1,000 cc. Slow turning and run for ever and you sit low out of the wind. Cost used I haven't a clue but must be less expensive than a Harley. I personally prefer mid 70's BMW's (R90/6 and R90s) twins with carbs easy to maintain and very reliable.

sierraben, that proves you are old. I had a Suzuki 80 in a minibike, 40 mph top end (crazy) and 1st pulling hills. Remember the Oakland hill climbs in the 60's and 70's? I saw gravel first hand like 3" from the face many times. Closed off around 80-81 but the hills show scares even today. I had a NSU for a short while.
