I tried a search but did not find anything with this problem.
The explorer has 120,000k on it and I just replaced the filter and fluid (syn meets merc V).
I was driving between countries this week when the O/D light started blinking and I lost 5th gear. It stayed that way the whole trip 280 miles. I then parked the car for three days, after that I drove a short distance and the light still was blinking. I stopped for gas and when I restarted it the light was off and I had fifth gear again.
It stayed that way the whole trip home until the last 20 miles when it started again. The next day the trunk was OK.
I understand disconecting the neg battery terminal will reset it but I am going to the US in a few days and would like to pick up any parts that could cause this. It is hard to get parts here and would rather be on the safe side.
Can't tell you what parts you need, but when you come to the US, go to a larger chain parts store (Advanced, Autozone, Pep Boys, etc.) and see if they will pull any codes for you. Often, they will pull the codes for free in hopes that you will purchase the parts from them. Then, based on the codes left behind, you may know what the problem is.
Can't do that since I am going by plane. Was hoping someone had the same problem. I heard maybe the TP sensor could cause this but that seems weird. I plan to get a code reader while I am there.
Oooops, I saw driving between countries and didn't look at your location. I suppose it would be a long drive for you. You could do a search of this forum, I seem to remember some solenoid that gives some problems, but you should still check your codes first. Just because there is a common issue, it doesn't mean that's the issue your truck is having. Since your's is a '98, you'll need and OBD II reader to get the codes.
