stacks?

i was thinking about putting a single stack on my truck(1980 f250 351M) and was wondering if a single 3" pipe would be too big, or if i should use 2 1/2"? also, does any body know where i could get a flapper for a decent price, or some simple plans to make one myself, im somwhat good at sheet metal work, and such. i planned on cutting the pipe farther up towards the engine, moving the skeleton cat and my glasspack up closer, and just routing it up through the bed, theres already a hole there for it.

Tell me if you think this would work out, or if you think it will cause me trouble, tell me too! im open for structural criticism.

the only problem i have with duel stacks is that since im running a gasser i dont want to have the exhaust too big and get back pressure. ive seen trucks with two stacks and one stack, and the single still looks pretty good, and like i said, will probally suit the 351M better than two stacks.

Does anyone know where a flapper or top hat could be found to fit on 2 1/2 inch pipe?

Big Truck or Farm store should have a flapper.

A Single 3" stack would be fine for the 351m. You could actually go a little bigger then 3"(3.5" max), but 3 will be fine. Dual 2.5" stacks would work as well, but would look a little funny with such small pipe.

the larger the pipe, the LESS back pressure you will have, and the better it will run. the exhaust on my 79 finally rotted off, and i replaced the 2 inch system that was on it with a 3 inch 40 series flowmaster on the y pipe.. rite now it just has a down pipe on it. when i get the rest of the parts together, i am going to put twin 4 inch stacks on it like the diesel has.

A 3" would be fine. 2 3" stacks would look better, IMO. Dont worry about backpressure, like tjc transport said. The less the better. And the stacks will not hurt or help with backpressure anyway. They are just very long exhaust tips.

cool, thanks guys. i believe that will be my next project when i get done with the body panel replacement, which will pbly take a while, considering ive been working on 1 fender for over 2 weeks now.

also, do yall think that black stove paint would hold up well in this application? im not really a chrome or SS guy, and regular black paint would get messed up with all that heat, am i correct?

It should last ok. Prep and curing are the biggest thing to making it last.

I have an 85 F-250 with a 460, I have true duals in 2.5" pipe with twin 5" stacks. No cats or mufflers. The truck had the original exhaust when I got it, and I noticed no loss of power due to the reduced back pressure. The flappers are a pretty good idea, I have already fried a bird that fell in one of my pipes. I just put some plastic pots on the tops when the truck will be sitting for more than a day.

A good friend of mine has a '77 F250 Custom which he customized and used to take to truck shows along the east coast. What he did, was run dual 2" stacks out of the bed just behind the cab, but he then put 6" chrome pipes from the bed to just above the cab. The 2" pipe still runs to about 1.5-2 feet below the top of the 6" stacks. The 6" pipe is there to hide the puny 2 inch'ers.

And the resonance in there makes it sound sooooo sweeeeet! Its so deep, yet soothing. And when its cold (300 I-6), you can hear each cylinder fire with a distinct *ping* coming from the stacks.

thats a really good idea, and i would be operating on the same principles taht those chrome tip covers use. i never would of thought of doing something like that. The only thing i would change is just use standard exhaust for it, and paint it a flat black. Chrome just doesnt look very good on a truck like mine, IMHO.

Well yeah, you could paint it any color you want and it would still sound the same. Its just that his truck is for show (and go...he plows with it every winter) and the chrome looks awesome on it.
