Help needed, Engine keeps dying

Hello all,
I am new here and found this site by searching for an answer to my problem. I tried a search but I am really not sure exactly what to search for. Any help would be appreciated.
Here is my problem:
Start truck, all gauges"peg" (speedo, tach, oil press, water temp etc and only sometimes), truck idles rough or dies, restart same thing minus gauges acting up but you have to keep pressure on the throttle to keep it idling. You also have to keep it throttled up with the brakes on until it warms up. Sometimes when I get going down the road I can actually feel a surge in performance and then everything is all right from there on. It has been doing this off and on for some time but recently it does it about 90% of the time. I would like to be able to repair it myself but it shows no lights so I am guessing that it would require a dealer to check the codes.
This truck is a 2000 4x4 ext cab, 5.4 auto with approx 108k.
Thanks for any help,
Brian

Could be any number of things but you don't have to go to a dealer just yet. Some one else here may have seen this before but you can go to your local Autozone, or like store and have them read your OBDII system to see if you've tripped a code. If you have tripped a code let us know what it is and we'll go from there. At a glance it sounds like an IAC (or an AIC depending on what you read). This controls the idle function of your truck. This will usually trip a code.

If your gauges are pegging at start up sounds like a battery problem to start with dont know about the power problem could be IAC

Follow alberta's suggestion on both counts. Try the battery by itself first. Low battery voltage can interfere with IAC operation.

Steve

Welcome aboard.

Thanks for the input. I will try and run byAutozone on the way to work in the morning.
I had read about the IAC but the gauges acting up threw me off. If they find a code I will let you know from there.

Hi paulplasma and welcome to FTE

You're sure your battery is ok? Usually if the gauges peg themselves it's because the battery was low.
Have you tried jumping it?

I agree on the battery. I'd check the battery cable where is attaches to the starter. Mine was holding on my about 2 wires when my truck was acting like yours. I replaced the cable & fixed my truck

yup, because the headlights were so bright, and the battery charger said it was fully charged, i checked the cable to the starter. it was fine. so then i jumped it and took it to get load tested and it was real weak.? so i replaced it, and now all is fine. Im still not sure why it died so suddenly, it always seemed so strong and alternator is great, maybe 14.3v is too great.
either way, thanks for the advice!!!!

I fixed my dying at start up problem by replacing the IAC. Still pegs the gauges sometime at start up but it starts fine.
By the way that IAC is at the back of the motor jammed against the firewall. Pain in the **** to get to the 2 bolts that hold it and no slack in the wire harness but still pretty easy fix.
One more thing. I had the solenoid go out one time on this truck (2000 5.4), parts guy said it did not have a seperate solenoid that year but mine does. It is mounted on the firewall on the passenger side
