I am going to swap a cab off of a '77 model F-150 to a '79 F-150. Are there any real differences in them such as wiring or is it just little stuff. The '77 is an automatic and the '79 is a 4speed.
IIRC the frames changed right around 77 so I would measure first. Dont hold me to this but off the top of my head early 77 and older had narrower frames, late 77 and up are wide. Im sure someone will pop in with the exact years/widths
it has been a few years since since I swapped the cab on my 77 1/2 f250 4x4 w/a 79 2wd F150 cab. Here's what I remember
1 ford made suttle changes to the wiring through 73-79
2 2wd cabs have the humps stamped for the bolt-on 4X4 hump
3 check all the crossmembers under the cabs( mine differed by about an inch and hit the Tcase)
I gutted both of them (dash, wiring, everything) and other than all the work and that crossmember problem it was pretty painless
If I remember correctly the older models had norrower frames towards the rear of the vehicle. I believe the front was roughly the same until the end of 79 models. The rear of the frame widened in mid 77. (narrower form 73-77.5)
I also believe the only vehicle that the narrower setup was f250 Highboys, everything else only had minor modifications from 73-79. Hope this helps.
All you have to worry about is small stuff. Only the F-250's changed from 73-77 to the 77.5-79's. The 77-79 F-150's are a piece of cake. There shouldnt be much of a difference in the wiring if the both have the same engines. Just unplug all the wiring connections where appropriate, change any clutch linkages, reuse the tranny cover if applicable and dont forget to undo the parking brake when you swap the cabs. Oh and the throttle linkage might be different. If you have both trucks side by side than it will go real smooth.
