I have a 1985 ford F150 4X4 with the Dana 44 IFS front axle, and the diffiretial is starting to get very noisy so i thought i would just get a used from a 1995 F150 but the guy that was selling that one said it wouldn't fit so i was wondering if some one out there would know what the diffrence is or if the guy just didn't know the exchange years for this one. I haven't taken mine of the truck yet but from the out side they look the same exept for the 95 one has the number 44 casted into it on the bottom. Any help would be appreciated
Welcome to the site Tomas428! You've found the best there is and a bunch of really helpful and fun people to chat with. There's forums for just about everything...including just plain old bs-ing. Explore all the forums, read the READ FIRSTS in each and make this place a habit, like the rest of us.
If I were you, I'd go down to the differential forum or the forum that matches your truck. Folks here are really knowledgeable, but they only look up here for announcements and HOWDY's. Tech talk and help is best found in the appropriate forum...and there's a forum for about anything you can think of, specific to Ford Trucks.
They're the same, but how do you know changing the axle is going to fix the problem? Are you sure the gears are worn out? It's rare for someone to wear out the front axle.
Also, are you sure the gear ratios are the same? If not, you're in for a big surprise the first time you use it.
I would describe your problem more and maybe we can help - the problem may not be where you think it is.
The pinion bearings are very loose so i figured y would just change the hole differential because i have one from a 96 bronco that has the same gear ratio. One of my friends has a wrecking yard so we checked it on his computer and it shows the 83-91 are the same and 92-96 but he also said that there was guys that had interchnged parts that the computer didn't show and that this might work too. so was just going to make sure.
There is an odd ball year tfor the TTB axle but I think the differences are all on the outside end of the axle and not the carrier it's self. If swapping just the center then I see no problem with and if you swapped the complete TTB I wouldn't see a problem with that but trying to use say a caliper from 85 on a 96 set up may not work. I know the 4x2 trucks change the mounting style of the calipers some where in the 80's. Not sure if the same holds trus for the 4x4 trucks.
I believe in 87 or 88 on the 4WD F150s and Broncos Ford went to a goofy set up on the hubs, spindles, and lockouts...similar to the design used on 4WD Rangers, Bronco IIs, and early Explorers. They only ran it for a year or two.
