I have a '67 F100 with 117K miles on it. It has a 300 6cyl and a C4 (I believe) automatic transmission. After driving for 30 minutes or more at highway speeds, if I come to a complete stop and then step on it, the tranny stutters and slips. When I back off the throttle and ease into the speed I have no slippage. It also seems to take longer for Reverse or Drive to engage when I shift from Park while hot.
This only occurs when the transmission is HOT. I can't get it to slip at all when cold or warm (10 miles of driving). I plan on driving 650 miles tomorrow, and I NEED ADVICE on what to do, or if I should abort my trip (I drove it over 600 miles last week and noticed these symptoms, but they seemed more of an annoyance than a serious concern).
PS I have drained the pan and changed the filter, and the tranny works flawless when cool.
Jerry,
I would have the transmission checked out by a local shop before I take off on a 650 mile trip. Getting towed home is expensive. Being stranded on the side of the road really bites. William in Atlanta
I second the shop idea. They can do a pressure test that gives a better idea what's going on. It might be a simple fix; but if exasperated, it could become a major problem.
