Yesterday on my short 10 mile commute, I had it demonstrated to me how the V10 has this Dr.Jeckyl and Mr Hyde personality.
As I left my subdivision to pull on to the back road I drive out to work on , I pulled out behind a school bus and I had to follow him almost all the way to work. My truck never went over 1800 RPM as we did 40 MPH on this windy road. There are a few hills but the truck never shifted down, just an uncanny smooth , quiet ride like you would expect from a big luxury sedan.
Then I got lucky and at the last intersection before I got to work , the bus turned right and I was turning left which is a slight grade. I hit the T/H button ...........................
waited until the truck was rolling staight and nailed it. The back end breaks loose and the angry GIANT RICER growl starts building and from 4000 to 5000 RPM, the sound is very neat.
So here this gentle engine that was behaving like a Debutante sipping Napolean Brandy without getting her lips wet ......... it turns into an angry logger guzzling a pint down getting ready to kick ***.
I thought to myself, gee at almost 4 bucks a gal. for gas, this little run probably cost me 50 cents.
Then it hit me what a bargain that was! Where else can you have that much fun for 50 cents worth of fuel. The guy out in his speed boat is going through 30 bucks in fuel every hour. I hope he is getting as much enjoyment from his boat as I get in my V10 SD. Take care. Wrenchtraveller.
I feel your pain errrr I mean adrenelin kick. What is it about these V-10's anyway? Just hard to keep em corralled. They like to stretch their legs. Could the problem be not with the SD, but with the operator? Surely not!
Driving home in the evening, pass a garage - the one you pass everyday on your way home - and see the guys outside waiting for you, arms waving, urging you to mash the pedal. You find yourself smiling and shifting into 4th gear, listening as the duals fill the quiet evening air. You look back as they all step out towards the road, watching joyfully while you rapidly disappear around the corner ----------------- PRICELESS
I like cruising along at 60 on the freeway and then dropping the hammer. My non-torqueshift drops into second and sets me back in the seat as it does that sort of HOWL towards 3rd. When it does hit third it is like hittin' the turbo boost as the engine pulses the truck ahead before I back off approaching 90....
I've always believed that it is more fun to have a sleeper vehicle instead of a fast looking, noisy vehicle that can't back up the talk! (Has a tendancy to keep the police from paying too much attention to me too!)
Same thing here. Two kids in one of those yellow S10 ZR2 pickups pulled up to me at a light and started revving the motor so I let him take off and just paced him to the next light. But then the passenger looked over at me and gave me this stupid head shake and the driver kept creeping up and jumping on the brake like an idiot. So when that light turned I burned it up.
Their lane merged right to my lane about 150 yards up. He kept up with me until maybe 40 mph then I pulled away from him so easily it surprised me. Obviously they found themselves studying the dents and V10 badge on my tailgate at the next light. No head shaking or theatrics this time-lesson learned.
In the 60’s going to college along a long stretch of I-45 in Texas. I was tooling along in my old car and looked in my rear view and saw and heard the roar of a 427 Ford. It passed me with me with that dignity and that "Hey look at me ...don’t mess with me power. Those were the type of motors you dreamed of but were way out of reach for this country boy. Now after purchasing this V-10. It seems to be my turn in getting the stares and people looking up and waiting to hear the roar of that stock exhaust. So it has an appetite for dinosaurs. It is truly worth it! The Super Duty draws wanta be racers to it like flies to honey. Pulling up first to a stop light in a 2-3 lane hwy is a quest every time. You calmly glance down and see what’s next to you and see someone almost always point at that V-10 emblem.
Then the fun begins. 6000 lbs of Ford and all that torque …. I’m back in the 60’s again
Back in the 60s again, right on Agronomist, you have put my feelings for the V10 in print. Mine has just turned up 6000 miles and it is turning into a real animal. On cold dry pavement, these Conti won't take hold and I have had my rear tires break lose at 40 MPH. Unreal in a stock pickup that weighs in at 7500 pounds. I have 4.10 gears and LS and when I drive this truck it is really tricky to pull away without wheelspin and those rear tires have over 3500 pounds of weight on them. That is more than the total weight of most muscle cars. I would love to have a 3 valve V10 is some thing light like a reg cab SB F150. It would be a hoot to drive I am sure.
Charlie has taken a few people out in his hopped up 05 and was glad he had the leather seats as some of them had to shake out their shorts.

back in the 60's we are with this beast of a motor that is 100% as don states. i have my fill of kids who think they can win when they should know better. just this am it was a dodge hemi 2500 against my 10 in a burn out contest the 10 won hands over as the dumbie with the dodge bogged down after about 30 seconds. or was it because he could not breath any more form my smoke. yep need a new rear pair now,
