They do alot of things in other countries that I do not want to do and IMHO any comparison is unfair. They may pull their stuff with Volvo's and they may load a Toyota until the bumper drags the ground, but that doesn't mean they want to do that. They do it because that is what they have to work with, alot like the aforementioned Lada.

I don't mean to jump on your comments bf250, but I still occasionally hear the reliability and longevity card when people refer to American cars and trucks. Certainly not as much as in the past but it still comes up. I have owned many vehicles, almost all of the American makes and at least one each from Toyota, Honda and Nissan. I will admit that I faithfully maintain all of my vehicles, but with the excection of 1 Ford F150 that I owned the American vehicles were all superior in power, reliability, ease and cost of maintenance and modification and I got more bang for my buck. As for longevity, as a rule I have not kept any vehicles for very long (more than 4 years). The vehicles I currently own are all Ford's and I have had 2 of them for longer than average. One of them is my 2000 X which is truely the King of SUV's and I will probably keep it for a long time to come.
I would agree that I would like to see them offer a few more engine varieties in other vehicles, specifically diesels in more models. My $0.02 worth.

oh, i was misunderstood, i wasn't being all serious about the other countries using thier cars for stuff, as you said, its because its all they have, i was just making the reference to how much power is needed vs wanted vs for safely doing the job.

i think american vehicals have great reliabilty, my last truck (1995 f-350 460) went 163,000 miles with only a replaced trannie and i was harsh on that thing, i sold it and it is still running fine with over 200,000 on it, still doesn't leak a drop! i was talking about how cool it would be to have vehicals with 5 or 7 year bumber to bumper warranties, i would take less power option for increase bumper to bumper warranties. let me decide how to make more power, thats the fun part of owning a truck. i moved back to the states and was here for 1 week when i bought my 2004, plan on keeping it for a long time!

Detroit went like a wimpy dog tucking their tail between it's legs and scampered into the corner. I bought a new truck in 77 and brought it home, gutted the drive-train out with only 150 miles on the clock. I dropped in a 500HP big block along with a billet tranny, 6 inches of lift to get some air and drove it 250 thousand miles till I retired it.

As far as diesels go they have come a long way in such a short time. Add one good programmer with some sick tunes and you got one awesome ride.
