i need a new steering box for my 77 highboy. are there any other years/models that are interchangable. any 2wd boxes that would bolt up? or can you get rebuild kits for these? i found one company in texas that rebuilds these boxes and other power assist components, but dont know yet if he deals with this particular box.
i was hoping to find a cheaper way to get good steering than a conversion or new parts. i dont have a problem w/ power assist, just the sloppy worn-out box. i dont have the money to find conversion parts right now, so i wanted to make what i have work well. i found a seal kit for the assist ram that i think will work, but the box is very loose, even after adjusting the set screw. i plan on getting a steering shaft made at my local welding shop, gotta be cheaper that way than 250-300 for mail order parts, i woul dlike to be able to rebuild the box, but cant find any kits
are you sure your play is in the box? just about everything in my system was worn out. i adjusted the box and removed everything else and replaced it with a manual drag link. actually where the adjusting screw screw screws into the cover on mine the threads were stripped, so i had to helicoil it to get it to adjust right. otherwise you should be able to find another box just about anywere (used) pretty cheap.
i havent blocked up the front end yet to find all the play, but just turing the wheel and looking under the hood i can see that the box and steering shaft from the column to the box has a lot of play, was going to get those parts fixed and move down the line. i thuoght of just getting a used one from a junkyard, but then i still have a 30 year old used box. i might just have to search around for a tight one.
The valve that is mounted on the draglink can also get alot of slack in them. They need a little slack to work right but not much. I had shimmed mine before switching to a 79 box.
well, i put the front end on jack stands and started wiggling things, the drivers side tie rod end is shot and where the pitman arm attaches to the 3-piece valve drag link is bad. will the ball stud kit from dennis carpenter fix the second problem? i cant get that drag link at any parts store around here, called all over , most people dont have a clue what i'm trying to say and no one can get parts. its the bendix type, bolt together.
