last year my uncle got a loaded box truck down stuck down a hill and decided to tow it out with his 05 f350 4x4 crew cab 6.0 td dullie. we were on a flat road with good asphalt but when we tried tow pull it out it couldnt get any traction and the tires just spun. so he suggested we put wieght in the bed. after adding about 1900 puonds of sandbags to the bed it pulled the box truck out no problem. i want to find out if adding paylaod increases of decreases towing and if so is there anywhere i can get ratings?
Mechanical traction is different then towing rating.
The amount of available traction should increase as you add weight to the truck. However, your towing capacity will stay the same so you lose towing capacity as you add weight to the truck ( if you add a ton in the bed, you have to take a ton off the trailer)
the owners manual, and most of the cdn dealer brochures have all the ratings for towing in them, for all sd`s. the allowable towed capacity drops with the extra weight added to the tow vehicle. those numbers ARE GUIDE LINES ONLY !!!! use common scence and good judgement. even if the 350 is rated to haul 18.000 pounds, with that load on, you`d best not attempt to cruise and lane change at 70 mph as if your empty! my fifth is 2300 on the pin (all tanks full), 4 adults, 2 dogs (chihuahua`s), i`ll put 1-1.5 cord of wood into the box, and have no problem moving it down the 4 lane @ 70. just remember if you`re going off road, the traction and tow limits are dramatically reduced! if you need or want more stability over and above the stock towing package i highly reccommend air bags (rear air suspension) as an add-on worth every penny.
That picture is for that particular vehicle only. His may be configured differently than yours. Besides, that is the Hitch rating, not the tow rating of the truck. That is the max that the hitch is rated to haul only.
Check owners manual or stop by a dealers and pick up a brochure. Even an 06 brochure will be real close to what your 05 can do.
