Does anyone know exactly WHY did Ford and Navistar elect to make a smaller diesel? As good as the 7.3 was, why did they decide to reduce engine size to put out more horsepower and torque. It seems to me; smaller engine but more power means more stress and strain on moving parts.
You know Dodge and Cummins have stayed with the same thing and just kept refining. I've had Fords my whole life but that Cummins is hard to beat all around. Now that the 6.0 seems to have the bugs worked out; here we go again!
Ford went with the 6.0 for one reason: emissions.
In 2007, you are going to see all the diesels change as the EPA cranks the pressure up another notch. The heavy truck manufacturers are dealing with it too and they are also have quite a few problems with their new engines.
It's no secret that they did the switch to the 6.0 for emissions, though. Well, that and the fact that some comsumers had apparently asked Ford to build them a quieter diesel.
Don't get me wrong, though. I love my 6.0. I'd love it a lot better if it didn't have that EGR valve on it, of course.
the 6.0 is a stronger engine than the 7.3 . ford went with a long stroke small bore engine to help pass emissions. the smaller bore allows for the combustion to be more complete.
