Question Emegency Flashers- 66

I just discovered that the emergency flashers on my 66 F100 only work if you turn on the key and then turn either signal on! Does this mean that the flasher for the emergency flashers isn't working, and it feeds-through the turn signals? This one may confuse me before I even start! Thanks' in advance' for your help, you guys are great! Brett

The flashers stop working when the turn signal is used. It should return when the ts is canceled.

Sounds to me that the flasher has been by-passed and fed through the turn signals. This would explain why the key has to be on. The emergency flasher should be constant hot and operate w/o a key. I would suggest running down the wire to see what is going on. I am sure with a little effort and a good eye, you can track the problem. Best of luck to you.

On my 66, when both the flasher are on and you decide to turn your T/S on the T/S do not cancel the emergency flasher, but if I apply the brakes, the flasher will stop flashing. Lasracin is exactly on the money, sounds like a by-pass procedure, the emergency flasher is also a seperate flasher button/fuse than the T/S flasher button. Additionally you don't have to have the key to the on position to operate the emergency flasher, but you do to operate the T/Signals.

You are also correct. If the flashers are operating, it will void the turn signals. But when the brake is pushed, it will disengage the flashers. Let us know what you find out, Biggut.

Don't go too fast guys, there are only three wires running to the rear of the truck, one is for tail lights (both sides), the other two handle emer. flash, turn signal, and brakes.

Something has to give when more than one item is used.

the only wires running to the lights are the running lights, turn signall/brake and hazards and the reverse lights. the brake lights are wired into the turn signal switch so are the flashers and hazard. the turn signal cam has 4 contact points if they are off slightly they will screw the system up.

In addition to what is previously mentioned, I would want to make sure that all grounds are good...

Ok my 65 had the same problem that I got straight this weekend.
Someone had installed a normal two prong relay. I installed a three prong relay and the e flashers are working with just the **** pulled.
My relay plugs directly into the back of the Emergency flasher control ****.
I still have the problem of the key having to be on and I will track down the feed to the switch and move it to a constant power source.

Thumbs up Found It! !!!

Hey Guys! I'm almost ashamed to tell you this; but I found my problem. I had no power at the flasher switch, so I traced the wire to the fuse box. Guess what? The flashers are fed by the cigar-lighter fuse. I replaced it, and the flashers work fine! The fuse block says nothing about the flashers on that fuse. Live and learn! I'm just glad that I have flashers now---you never know where you might get stranded out here in Idaho! I surely do appreciate yoyr help--I can always depend on you getting me pointed in the right direction!! Well; I've got some rust to cut-out of my floorboards. The fun never ends!! Thanks again' Brett

Glad to hear you where able to solve your problem, I need to look at my fuse box too reclarify my head on fuse location as well. My set up is different, got fuse for following components, 20amp single fuse for heater, 14amp single for T/S, stop lamp, 14 amp for cigar ltr (no fuse in this slot or lighter assembly in truck), one fuse size (?) in the instrument panel, and a 9 amp fuse for the dome light. Also two plug in connectors one empty the other has a brown wire I believe with a female connector ( probably wiper washer motor) which is not working. But I believe my flasher is either fuse through the T/S stop lamp fuse or Instrument panel fuse.
But hey if it's not broke why fix it.....
I really like the emergency flasher option.

Make sure your brake lights are working. Sometimes they are tied into the turn switch on different auto's and when the switch goes bad, you lose your brake lights too. Ford Truck Guy
